Endorsements

“Wonderfully accessible, informative and authoritative…An ideal starting point for those new to the field, a great stimulus to discussion for those who are already initiated." - Alister E McGrath, Professor of Theology, King’s College, London

“People looking for an intelligent discussion of some of the difficult questions that come up when one is serious about faith and serious about science should look at Questions of Truth. Here, Polkinghorne and Beale have provided their responses to questions raised by just such people. For sampling a wide variety of topics, or digging down into a few, this little book is a refreshing contrast to the polemic and misinformation that have characterized much of the writing in this area.” - William D. Phillips, Nobel Prizewinner in Physics

"Here in the 21st century, many thoughtful seekers are rejecting shrill and extreme positions of atheistic scientism or religious fundamentalism and are instead searching for deeper answers to questions about God and the natural world. Standing on the rational bedrock of faith as the "evidence of things not seen," Polkinghorne and Beale provide richly nuanced responses to the questions that many seekers are asking. This is simply a fantastic resource." - Francis Collins, author of The Language of God and former Director of the Human Genome Project

“An important contribution to the dialogue between science and religion.” - Martin A Nowak, Professor of Biology and of Mathematics, Harvard University

Author/Artist Review

Author: Nicholas Beale
Located in: UK
Submitted: October 19, 2008

Tell us a little about yourself.  I was a student of John Polkinghorne and am now a social philosopher and strategist. I'm a cradle Christian, married with 3 children.

What was your motivation behind this project?  For the last 10 years we've worked together on Polkinghorne.net responding to questions from all over the world on science and religion. This is a chance to build on this work.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  An understanding that Christianity is entirely consistent with a fully up-to-date knowledge of science, and insights into specifics. We don't expect people to agree with everything we say, but to understand that it is reasonable.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Greatly deepened my understanding, and also put us on the track of some interesting scientific discoveries!

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Of living authors I greatly admire John Polkinghorne, Tom Wright, Charles Handy and Alister McGrath.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  There are some really great comments from great scientists about this book. Tony Hewish, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics, has written the foreword. Bill Phillips, who also won the Nobel Prize for Physics has given a strong endorsement, as has Prof Martin Nowak at Harvard. And Alister McGrath says it's “A wonderfully accessible, informative and authoritative guide to the big questions in science and religion. An ideal starting point for those new to the field; a great stimulus to discussion for those who are already initiated."
