Tell us a little about yourself. Im a writer, conference speaker and storyteller. This is my first work of fantasy.
What was your motivation behind this project? Fantasy stories have always had a special place in my heart, and when I first became a Christian I read The Pilgrims Progress and was stunned by it. At the time it was as if my black and white faith was transformed into full color by seeing God through the eyes of story and not theology. I wondered what it would be like to retell the basic plot of The Pilgrims Progress, not as an allegory, but rather as a fantasy adventure story. Thats what gave birth to this book.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? The Pilgrims Progress is an allegory thats hard to follow and doesnt really relate as well today to readers as it did when it was first written several hundred years ago. I hope people will see, within the pages of this new fantasy story, glimpses of the Light and of Gods story just as they did with Bunyans classic when it was written so many years ago.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I had to become intimately familiar with The Pilgrims Progress to write this book. As I worked on literally every page I was forced to think about my Christian walk and the meaning, metaphors and parallels to the story I was telling. I was impressed again that Gods grace is what I need most, because all too often Ill step off the path and I need him to forgive me and get me heading in the right direction again.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Well, for this book I was obviously inspired by Paul Bunyan, the author of The Pilgrims Progress. I like to think that if he were around today he would read Quest for Celestia and be pleased to see how his story has morphed and changed to relate to twenty-first century readers.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: This is not a paraphrase of The Pilgrims Progress, but a complete reimagining of the story as a fantasy adventure. There are parallels, but its a stand-alone fantasy. If youve never read The Pilgrims Progress you wont be lost at all, and if you have, youll see parallels to it that, I hope, will add more light on the meaning and intent of the original story.
