Planting and leading a new church is not easy. There are the inevtiable setbacks and challenges that come with launching anything new. And the process will test and try a leaders faith, as they face discouragment, loneliness, and failure. In this book, pastor and seasoned chuch leader Wayne Cordeiro speaks the truth in love, offering wisdom and insight to prepare leaders as they face the difficulties and hardships of church planting, while providing encouragement and inspiration for the journey. Sifted is based on Jesus encouragement to Peter in Luke 22 to keep his faith and minister to others from his weakness. An experienced practitioner, Wayne shares the things he wishes hed known when he was starting a new church. With additional stories from other prominent, seasoned leaders, each chapter includes a thought provoking, challenge question to develop a heart that is surrendered to God, focused on being and becoming versus doing and accomplishing. Wayne writes about a healthy integration and balance of personal care and leadership amidst the difficulties of the church planting journey. Loneliness and discouragement are normal in church planting, but God cares more about our journey of faith and who we are becoming than our worldly accomplishments and the churches we build. Church planting is an ongoing process of surrender, personal growth and character development. The book will challenge leaders to persevere and rededicate themselves to their calling, their marriage, and their family. Instead of a how to book on models and methods, this is a combination of a self-assessment book that challenges leaders scorecards of success, encourages leaders to realize that they are not alone in what they are experiencing, and provides wisdom for the long haul to position younger leaders for a life of ministry and finish strong.

IreneUnited States4 Stars Out Of 5Good book for a church leader to readJune 6, 2012IreneUnited StatesQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This is an excellent book for those involved in starting and leading a church congregation. You will read this and take away some very simple advice and also be encouraged as you work each day for the Lord.
There were many parts of this book that I found enlightening. I thought the authors' view that you have to have a vision to really grow your ministry was a very good one. His practical advice on handling issues that come up in a congregation was well written. The author's writing is simple and easy to understand. He offers clear advice and encouragement.
After reading this book you will realize that being called to the ministry is just as much a job as any other work you might try to do. I gave this book 4/5 stars because although it offers excellent advice and words of encouragement I thought some of it was tedious.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.
Daniel DarlingChicago, ILAge: 25-34Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Challenging and Encouraging for Church LeadersMarch 28, 2012Daniel DarlingChicago, ILAge: 25-34Gender: maleIt's rare to read a book on church leadership that is written specifically to small churches or church planters. Maybe there are others out there, but most of the good ones seem to address church leaders with vast ministries and huge staffs. I appreciated sifted because it was biblical, from the heart, practical, and challenging.
This book really challenged me in powerful ways. One important way that Cordeiro (and the others) get to the heart of the matter is by stripping away our earthly motivations for ministry success. Why are we in ministry? What is our motivation? Who brings the results--us or God?
There is also a ton of just practical stuff that goes beyond the typical church pastor books. Like most, they discuss the workaholic tendencies of pastors. But they also come from the other side and challenge pastors to work hard, that there is no substitute for sweat, toil, and labor in the ministry. For me, one of the most helpful sections was the discussion of "seasons" in ministry. Instead of striving for balance, we should recognize that there are seasons when we're giving a ton of our time to the ministry and seasons where we are giving a ton of our time to our families, etc.
This book was super encouraging and super challenging. I highly recommend it.
