otis5 Stars Out Of 5Best commentary setJuly 1, 2015otisQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My father had this set and had to get one for myself. The commentary is good in itself, but with the sermon outlines and notes, and invaluable resource for minister and student of the word.

WillNorwich, UKAge: 25-34Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Excellent value for the preacher and ministerJuly 27, 2013WillNorwich, UKAge: 25-34Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Having just started my first pastorate, I've begun to realise how lacking my library is in commentaries, especially practical ones on OT books. Although any set is going to be hit or miss, it is always helpful to own one to ensure adequate coverage across the Scriptures especially if asked to prepare something at short notice and this has been a great purchase and one that will serve me well for the future.
The format is a fairly detailed expository commentary on each chapter of Scripture, followed by suggestions for preaching and several sermon skeletons for further ideas. Although it is true that a number of the sermon outlines "creak" a bit (it is over a hundred years old!), in general much of their application is spot-on and with prayer and thought are very helpful for preparation for the pulpit. Again, although the commentaries don't engage with modern scholarship, they do tend to grapple well with the text and there is much here that is still very helpful, especially when used in conjunction with more recent works.
Lest anyone think they are only useful for the preacher, I have just finished reading through Kings with them, and have profited greatly personally from the volume covering it- so much so that I have just bought Davis' commentaries on Kings to consider preparing a sermon series on them!
The bindings seem strong and attractive and the print is readable, and whilst they are available digitally, there is much to be said for getting them in a printed format to allow for scribbling and note-making. For the price they really are super value and worth purchasing for any preacher/minister, and arrived very quickly too.
JScherzerSpring, TXAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5This product is a must!April 15, 2013JScherzerSpring, TXAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Thought-provoking and thought-inspiring -- those are the words I would use to describe these books. I have been refreshed by the words of others to study with a depth I have been lacking lately. Sometimes we do not realize the dryness of our own souls until we are given new inspiration. These commentaries came at such a time for me. The Bible has once again become the living, breathing Word of God to me.
Q: Are these books based on the 1611 King James version ?
The publisher does not indicate which King James Version this commentary is based on.
Q: I would like to know what the date of the first edition pulpit commentary was? I am looking at investing a sizable investment (to me) in a good set of commentaries of the whole Bible I understand that they are dated. I am looking to find out how dated. IE. Are they written in the old english that I will find difficult to use Hermeneutical interpretation with?
These were first published in the late 1800s to early 1900s, so the language is closer to modern English. The actual publication date is unknown.
Q: What is the publication date on the pulpit commentary 32 vol. set and what is the relationship to the date of the original
This commentary was first published in the late 1890s. As a set it has changed publishers several times and so has had multiple publication dates. The set is currently on it's 3rd printing by Hendrickson.
