Publisher's Description

With Proverbs, veteran Old Testament scholar Tremper Longman III offers an accessible commentary on one of Scripture's most frequently quoted and visited books. With his deft exegetical and expositional skill, the resulting work is full of fresh insight into the meaning of the text.

In addition to the helpful translation and commentary, Proverbs considers theological implications of these wisdom texts, as well as their literary, historical, and grammatical dimensions. Footnotes deal with many of the technical matters, allowing readers of varying interest and training levels to read and profit from the commentary and to engage the biblical text at an appropriate level. This built-in versatility has application for both pastors and teachers.

This is the second volume in the Baker Commentary on the Old Testament Wisdom and Psalms series.

Author Bio

This is a very helpful book. In his preface, Longman correctly suggests that no one book can cover everything, but this one comes very close to covering everything of importance for the minister or student. Those wanting a detailed interaction with redaction critical issues will want to look elsewhere, but for those whose primary concerns are the meaning of the text and its implications for today, this book is as good as it gets. The introduction includes a very interesting survey of wisdom literature in the ancient near east. The information on genre and style are also very helpful. The discussion of the woman wisdom metaphor (which is a major theme in this work) was both provocative and enlightening. Current concerns regarding Feminist approaches and inclusive language are also addressed in a very helpful way. The commentary itself has a pleasing layout and is easy to read and comprehend even though it is obviously based on in-depth research. Many commentaries on Proverbs either deal with chapters 10-31 in a topical arrangement or deal with them in a verse by verse format. Longman does both as he deals with the verses in the order in which they appear in the Biblical book but also provides a topical treatment in a lengthy appendix. The topical appendix deals with the entire book, not just chapters 10-31). While I have not used every commentary on Proverbs, I have used several and I consider this one to be the best for ministers, teachers, and students.
