    Life Promises for Success

    by Jim Tressel

    Honestly, when I first requested this book I was a little skeptical about it. Was it going to just be about all the big things in life we can do to get success? Was it truly going to be from a point of view from a man who wants to glorify God and give Him the glory in his success?

    After reading just a few of the beginning chapters I knew this book was different. It wasn't just about doing things and feeling success in ourselves. God is the one who will lift us up and He deserves all the glory. The author. Jim Tressel is a football coach and knows much about success from both the public side and the personal side.

    Mr. Tressel really writes about success as not some public glory thing. Success is knowing your somebody and not setting expectations so high you will never feel like you've succeeded. Bible verses are quoted on every page, ones that are applicable to the subject covered on the particular section. I really appreciated this as there is no better encouragement then the scriptures.

    The book is hard bound and very strong. I liked that the front cover was padded, just a little thing, but it does add to the book.

    "Everyone wants to succeed—at work, at home, in relationships, and in life. But sometimes the road to success can be difficult, and even the most seasoned leaders can find themselves in need of some motivation.

    In Life Promises for Success, NYT bestselling author and Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel shares a collection of inspiring readings and Bible promises designed to encourage those seeking to succeed in every area of life.

    Filled with easily applicable Bible verses, motivational quotes, and engaging and inspiring readings, Life Promises for Success is the perfect daily reader for anyone looking to reach their highest goals, achieve greatness, and inspire others to do the same."

    I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm sure I'll go back to it often. I would recommend this book to many.

    Review: Life Promises for Success - Jim Tressel - February 2011

    I'm not sure about you , but I know that I am one of those girls who love reading quotes books and poems , anything that I can write down and keep as a guide to inspiration. I even have a purple corkboard type photo pinboard that I attach quotes etc , things I find inspiring too . At the moment it has a Cover of NZ Leaders Monthly which Open Polytechnic did for their students to inspire a higher achievement at your own work levels that reads "Miss Paula Phillips -Person of the Year" . Imagine what it would really feel like to have that next to your name. You would feel pretty amazing and worth alot. With Life Promises for Success , Jim Tressel has written a selection of quotes, poems , bible verses - you name it , it's in here - everything that God has promised us on how to achieve to our full potential.

    The Book is split into three parts : The Essence of Success which discusses what Success actually is , how do we define success - is it just passing through or is it getting the top marks , is success measured by how smart you are or how you aim to be a B+ Student ? .

    The second part is titled "The Elements of success" and covers topics from Persistence to Integrity to Humility and finally The Epitome of Success - what you come out feeling when you have been a right success.

    Excerpt :

    The Man Who Thinks He Can

    If you think you're beaten, you are;

    If you think you dare not, you don't.

    If you'd like to win, but think you can't,

    It's almost a cinch you won't.

    If you think you'll lose, you're lost,

    For out in the world we find

    Success begins with a fellow's will;

    It's all in the state of mind. . . .

    Think big, and your deeds will grow;

    Think small and you'll fall behind.

    Think that you can, and you will;

    It's all in the state of mind.

    If you think you're outclassed, you are;

    You've got to think high to rise.

    You've got to be sure of yourself before

    You can ever win a prize.

    Life's battles don't always go

    To the stronger or faster man,

    But soon or late the man who wins

    Is the fellow who thinks he can.

    It's all in the state of mind!

    How would you define success? Some think it is having money or ascending the corporate ladder. Tressel says success is not about what we have or what we've done. It's about who we are.

    Tressel understands it is hard in our society to keep success in proper perspective and not base our sense of self-worth on what we do. He should know. As head coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes since 2001, he led the team to bowl games, Big Ten titles, and a national championship. It's not achieving your goal, he says. "The thing we should most enjoy about any endeavor is the road we travel together to get there." (9)

    Through quoted sayings, Scriptures, poems, stories of successful people, and his personal thoughts, Tressel encourages readers to be the best they can be. It is a life long adventure.

    There is a peace of mind from knowing that you have done your best. You have to have faith , placing your trust in something bigger than yourself. You have to have belief, the outward expression of that faith.

    For those who want to reach their full potential, Tressel says, "you first need to keep in mind that achieving excellence means becoming the best person you can possibly be..." (61) You could be a stellar performer, but if you are not living an upright life, you won't achieve your full potential. He inspires his readers to have hope. He calls for humility and love. He gives encouragement in overcoming adversity, being persistent, being selfless, overcoming setbacks, teamwork, etc.

    My favorite of Tressel's quotes: "Hold yourself to a higher standard than anyone expects of you." Henry Ward Beecher (37) My favorite of his own writing: "Promise yourself...to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others..." (187)

    This book would make a great gift for a graduate or anyone else needing inspiration.

    My review is best summed up in the comment I made to my wife earlier this week:

    "I really would like this book for Father's Day, except for one problem."

    "What's that", she asked.

    "I already own it."

    This small, daily devotional would make the perfect Father's Day gift for the dad or husband that enjoys football or sports in general and wants a better understanding on the meaning of "success" in the life of a believer. It would be just as appealing to the sports minded mom or any person that is trying to discover where "success" fits into the his or her life - interested in sports or not.

    The author has done a superb job of combining scriptural nuggets, anecdotes, quotations, and good advice into a readable, pocket sized, daily devotional. Though written by the coach of a Division I football powerhouse, the book is not a sports book. Anecdotes and quotations are borrowed from all walks of life - literature, politics, the sciences, and sports. Though not common in a daily devotional, my lack of familiarity with many of the individual quoted, an occasional photograph highlighting the individuals in their normal setting, whether in the office or on the football field, would have added some context to the stories and quotations.

    Whether a sports fan or a casual fan, the book will help prepare the reader for the game of life wherever it must be played.

    This turned out to be a great little bedside, briefcase, purse book. I had no idea who Jim Tressel was until I set the book in our family reading area. When my husband saw it I got an ear-full on Tressel and all the little details too. Tressel, the author, is the Head Football Coach for Ohio State. Needless to say, he is an accomplished coach and writer. In his book he shares his keys for success. The pages are set up as little daily devotionals. Each time you pick up the book you get a morsel of something inspired and great. The pocket-book is set up by different topics, like Attitude, Hope, Integrity, Setbacks, etc. Each issue contains Bible verses, quotes from Tressel or other encouraging people.

    I consider this book to be a gem. It's very easy to pick up and be uplifted by the words in only a few minutes of the precious time that we have. I didn't read anything that did not spur me on to be a better person, work harder, and strive for greatness. I think that men would especially enjoy this book for their office or home. Each portion has verses that are promises from God for many of the facets of our lives. This pocket-book would be a great gift for a college student, entrepreneur or anyone that would benefit from motivation and insight.
