"Too many of us are doing life at an unsustainable pace and losing sight of our first love. In his new book, Primal, Mark Batterson invites you to rediscover the reality of Christ and His passions. This book will challenge you, push you, and stretch you. You will walk away righteously aggravated, but catapulted into action."
CRAIG GROESCHEL, senior pastor of LifeChurch.tv

UrailakOregonAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Primal DVDJune 28, 2011UrailakOregonAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3This is a five-part study DVD based on the book, Primal by Mark Batterson. I read the book and really enjoyed it. I was eager to check out the DVD. The five main segments include Primal Christianity (corresponds to the first chapter of Primal), Heart (chapters 2 & 3). Soul (chapters 4 & 5), Mind (chapters 6 & 7), and Strength (chapters 8-10). Mr. Batterson shares his thoughts and experiences while asking us questions to help us take a closer look at the Great Commandment and challenge us to excel at it. What does it really mean to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength in our daily lives? According to Mark Batterson, it involves compassion, wonder, curiosity and energy. Each of the 5 segments ends with a key Bible verse and one or two questions/conversation starters. To me, this DVD is more like a super concise version of the book, just to whet your appetite :). I prefer the book and highly recommend it. However, I still enjoyed the DVD and the thought-provoking questions. It's great for small groups.
"What would happen if we peeled back the layers of tradition and institution? If we stripped away the practices, assumptions and habits in our lives that are not essential? Well, we would get down to the bedrock of Jesus' "primal" teaching. It's called the Great Commandment: to love the Lord with all our soul, heart, mind, and strength. Primal Christianity boils down to this one thing—being great at the Great Commandment." ~Mark Batterson

Rev BobNorth olmsted, OHAge: 45-54Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5This is a Great addition to your Bible StudyJune 7, 2011Rev BobNorth olmsted, OHAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4through five areas of Christianity in order to get us back to our Primal or purest faith possible. This DVD is a companion to his book of the same title and if you every watched a Rob Bell study video you'll enjoy this as well,. Batterson uses both storytelling and visual effects to get his point across to the viewer. He breaks the DVD into five areas, Primal, Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength. In each one he illustrates his view with a story of his personal journeys of faith or those of which he has come into contact with in his spiritual quest.
Mark's storytelling craft is that of the masters of writing like Hans Christian Anderson, he puts you at ease without putting you asleep with his narratives. At the end of each section he gives a biblical passage that sums up that area along with questions to expand your learning. Two of my favorite questions are, What needs to be stripped away to help you get back to a Primal love relationship with God? What was the most mind stretching book you ever read?
Mark's quest is to strip way the layers of complication that Christianity as put on itself threw the centuries and get back to the simple message of Jesus. With both his book and this DVD study guide you will be on your way to that goal. For more information go to his website, www.theprimalmovement.com

ShardingTell City, IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Visually Stimulating DVDMay 31, 2011ShardingTell City, IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3This DVD has five video segments that are visually stimulating. Each segment is approximately seven minutes and corresponds with chapters from the book of the same name by the same author. I have not read the book. I wanted to see if the DVD could stand alone as a Bible Study. I cannot say that it does. I can say that it offers a lot to think about. It does not provide enough scripture that I would consider it a Bible Study. It is a concept study and a review our response to what Jesus said is the greatest commandment as recorded in Mark 12:29 - 30 The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' This DVD offers an opportunity to discuss and evaluate our responses to how we love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Instead of a Bible Study, this is a study of our commitment to Christ.
The DVD offers a document available for printing that includes the questions at the end of each lesson or segment of the DVD. The video is visually interesting and engaging. It is shot around Washington DC and other places. While watching I made notes about key points, interesting thoughts and quotes and at least one statement that was presented as fact when it was really an opinion. But that's really just my opinion.
Since I haven't read the book, I don't know if the DVD enhances the book or not. If you have a small group that does not like to read, the DVD certainly offers enough for a discussion about the topics presented. For people with more Bible knowledge, additional scripture can be added for more of a Bible Study.
I enjoyed the DVD and may read the book sometime in the future - perhaps when I lead the small group next time! - UPDATE: I just read a review of this DVD written by someone else who read the book first. Maybe I'll skip the book based on that review of the DVD.

Dan BOviedo, FLAge: 35-44Gender: male2 Stars Out Of 5Not worth the time or moneyFebruary 21, 2011Dan BOviedo, FLAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 3Value: 4Meets Expectations: 1I REALLY like Batterson and his books. This video has high production value, but the content is nothing more than Batterson saying (word-for-word) what you read in the book. I was very disappointed. It seems like alot of DVD Bible Studies are nothing more than the book being read by the author or some other personality. Buy the book - but don't waste your money on the DVD.
