J. D.5 Stars Out Of 5August 18, 2010J. D.Latin content is presented in a clear, concise and systematic manner. This series makes Latin fun for both parent and child. Pronunciation keys are available for both consonants and vowels in both the student and teacher (parent) editions. This program is quite thorough covering over 100 Latin root words (quite the feat for young ones!), dipthongs, declensions, parts of speech and translations. The cd provides help with pronunciation, several Latin prayers (which are systematically taught in the book) as well as hymns and exercises which correlate to each chapter. Highly recommended!
Mary4 Stars Out Of 5January 3, 2010MaryThe text is presented in a clear, easy to learn format with constant repetition. Along with vocabulary words each lesson includes a portion of a Latin prayer. Be ready to learn a lot of vocabulary as there are close to 100 Latin words in just the first 10 lessons alone. Only the long vowels sounds of Latin words are presented in the text. Short vowel sounds and how words are pronounced must be ascertained through the accompaning cd or dvd.
JenniferBCanadaAge: 35-44Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5June 1, 2009JenniferBCanadaAge: 35-44Gender: FemaleEven with a single year of high-school Latin under my belt, the thought of teaching my children Latin was intimidating. Well aware of the value of Latin instruction half of all English words draw roots from this ancient tongue I duly jotted it down on my homeschooling to-do list despite my lack of confidence in my own teaching abilities. With Prima Latina young Latin scholars (and their parents) are eased into learning the language at an easy pace with an emphasis upon review and memorization. This slow and steady approach yields enormous results by the courses end. A second grader equipped with an understanding of the long list of vocabulary words and sayings found in the appendix will be well on the way. A knowledge of the English derivatives will surely stand him or her in good stead for the remainder of their lifetime; my own limited understanding of Latin is still benefiting me over a decade later.Ive often seen Prima Latina highly recommended for parents with no previous Latin instruction, but Ill go further and recommend it for all parents wishing to give their children an early, gentle start in Latin.
Q: Are the dvds neccessary for this course Or are they considered "support material"? I am interested in teaching this to my students, but don't want to purchase the dvds unless they are necessary.
This kit includes all the basic materials needed to teach the course. The DVDs are a great supplement, but not necessary for successful completion of the program.
Q: Are there grade levels to Prima Latina? We have been trying to find a good Latin curriculum for my son with no luck. Prima Latina looks to have some promise. My son will be entereing the 5th grade next year. What Prima Latina books would I need to purchase for a 5th grader with 2 years of Latin under his belt?
Prima Latina is intended for grades K-3. Latina Christiana 1 would be the appropriate level for a 5th grade student.
