Publisher's Description

You can stop trying to get everything right.

Is the pressure getting to you? Do you try to make everything work, only to find that your best efforts are largely ineffective?

Christians have unknowingly embraced two errors: that following the rules guarantees a good life, and that God is important because He dispenses blessings. When God’s blessings seem to taper off and when life doesn’t work out, people take it upon themselves to make things work. And that creates pressure that we are all too familiar with.

In The Pressure’s Off, best-selling author and counselor Larry Crabb introduces you to the New Way of living. God does not guarantee ease or convenience—or even a good outcome as the result of your obedience. But he does promise himself, no matter what the circumstances of your life.

When you seek God and nothing else, the pressure truly is off you.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for The Pressure's Off

"If, like me, you see blessing-centeredness rather than God-centeredness as a great weakness of American evangelicalism, you will hail this exploration of the freedom and joy of grace as timely therapy, a word in season that we all needed. May it be widely read and thoroughly digested."
—J. I. PACKER, theologian and author of Knowing God

"The evangelical church, choking under a pervasive legalism/moralism that suffocates the human spirit, finds a powerful voice for freedom in Larry Crabb. Writing from the inside out, he presents a vibrant way of living with
passion and without pressure."
—BRENNANMANNING, author of Ruthless Trust

"C. S. Lewis wrote about prosperity knitting us to this world, and while we are seeking our place in the world, the world is actually finding its place in us. Dr. Larry Crabb has constructed a compelling narrative that shows how we have imprisoned ourselves by using the world’s ways to ’get something from God,’ instead of appropriating God’s way to receive something from Him."
—CAL THOMAS, syndicated columnist and author

"Dr. Crabb not only gives us a clear mandate to celebrate Christian freedom, he also is our accompanist and exemplar on the Way of Freedom. You know he has walked that way with you. A remarkably personal message."
—JAMES M. HOUSTON, Chancellor Emeritus and professor of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

"This book makes a very important statement about how to live the Christian life. It takes the Christian beyond the obstacles and disappointments and, above all, beyond the age-old enemy of self straight into the arms of grace. Once there, the pressure is off. A real worthwhile read."
—FRANK RETIEF, Presiding Bishop, Church of England in South Africa

"At last we have a book that confronts contemporary Christian culture with its increasing tendency to be taken up with blessings more than the Blesser. I doubt whether anything Larry has ever written, or may write in the future, will contribute more powerfully to the needs of modern-day Christians than The Pressure’s Off."
—SELWYN HUGHES, director of the Center for World Revival and author of Every Day with Jesus devotional

    The Good

This is a book you CAN judge by it's cover. What is more freeing than being a boy jumping in a lake in the middle of summer? The Pressure's Off.

How can a book endorsed by J.I. Packer, Brennan Manning and Cal Thomas, be anything but good? You can read other reviews about the content. I'll just say_

The content is great, the book well-written.

The eight-week workbook in the back makes this a terrific counseling/discipleship tool.

If you struggle with being "good enough," this book will bring all the freedom of an old-fashioned summer swim.

If you are willing to experience a wild God of freedom and unpredictability, read it!

    The Bad

If you don't want to be convicted, don't buy it.

If you want to keep your god in a box, don't read it.

    The Ugly

It felt as if the "Old Way" of keeping the rules to satisfy God was easier to understand than the "New Way" of living by abiding in Christ. Maybe I needed some more nuts-and-bolts kind of examples.

My favorite quote: "Only the mature value the blessings of presence over the blessing of presents."

I recommend this book without reservation, and that's not because WaterBrook Multnomah sent me a free copy of this book for the purpose of review as part of their Blogging for Books program. The $11 value isn't enough for me to sell my integrity. Now, if they had thrown in an incentive or two_

The Pressure's Off: Breaking Free From Rules And Performance, written by Larry Crabb is a book centered around two errors Christians unknowingly embrace: 1) Following the rules guarantees a good life and 2) God is important because He dispenses blessings.

Dr. Crabb has written a book that carefully informs those who turn its pages that there are things we need to do in order to live the life God has intended for us. He teaches the reader how to remove the unneeded pressures of religion. In doing so, they will find enjoyment in the living out of their faith, such enjoyment that their faith will cause others to reach for the same within their own lives.

The central message of this book is very spiritually liberating in the fact that it helps the readers become more aware of how they are actually living for God. Thus it is a recommended read for all Christians seeking to live out loud for the sake of the gospel and the glory of God.
