This book is a fast read and I found it interesting to read about Antoinette Tuff's experience of stopping a school shooting. I've heard about ones that have happened and it was interesting reading someone's first person account of what happened in one that could have ended up like most of the other shootings.
I did find the book jumped all over the place. Once Tuff started talking about the events of the shooting, I just wanted to know what happened but instead Tuff would jump to her personal experiences which were interesting but I just wanted to know what happened in the shooting.
This is an interesting book for what it contains, although not everyone will agree with the theology she includes as I didn't always agree with it.
Antoinette Tuff's true life experience in her book, Prepared for a Purpose, can only be seen as inspiring. Her open and honest testimony of how her own difficult life events brought her to a place where she could help heal another broken person can do nothing but point someone to the power of God.
Tuff has not led a glamorous life, and in fact has fought her own demons. But her willingness to share those moments with her readers demonstrates the power of God in every sinner's life.
This book was an easy read, too, as she kept it fast-moving going back and forth from past events to the present.
I definitely recommend this book to encourage anyone in any type of crisis.
Prepared for a Purpose tells a story that deserves to be called Inspiring.
This book is a reminder that God is guiding every step of our lives, whether we're walking on the mountain tops or in the valley, and that when we ask Him to use us, He will surprise us all.
Antoinette Tuff's story is moving and soul-refreshing.
In a time when school shootings fill our cities with fear and their horror tears families apart, August 20th 2013 could have been another massacre.
Yet when the would-be gunman entered the building, carrying enough ammo to kill half the children inside, and insisting that this was not a game, today was the day they would die, he encountered a woman of God who had asked for God to use her.
Antoinette had begun her day, as usual, at an early hour with her Bible. Her morning routine of caring for family needs and then absorbing Scripture led her to Psalm 23. The truth in this Psalm comforts us no matter what trial we are enduring, but few of us meditate on the Psalm in the morning and then encounter an armed gunman.
The 233 can't-put-it-down pages pages of this book alternate between Antoinette's experiences that day in the school office and the story of her life up to that point, weaving together, making it plain that God was preparing her all along. We don't know what's coming up next, and perhaps we wouldn't be able to live if we could know, but thankfully God knows... He holds the future.
And I am delighted to have read this book. It's the story of evil averted by this humble, honest, woman whose spirit shines through as she tells the story.
As Antoinette says, It is time for us to "Open our heart to the possibility God will call on us one day and ask us to be an angel for someone, and realize God puts people in our paths to guide us on our whirlwind journeys, and await out next assignment from God with thanks and praise and joyfulness and we will prepared for our purpose. And when we are prepared, there is only one question we need to ask... the very question I asked in that office. God, what are we going to do?"
PREPARED FOR A PURPOSE is the story behind the story of a tremendous act of courage. Antoinette Tuff firmly believes that God is sovereign over our lives, over each and every moment, and that He uses all circumstances to mold us into vessels fit for His use.
Prepared for a Purpose takes us on a journey through her life, from the young girl whose mouth got her into trouble, to the woman whose mouth was used by God to avert a potential disaster. From the broken home of her childhood, through tempestuous teen years, a troubled marriage, the breakup of that marriage, and learning to face and deal with the special needs of her son, Antoinette was gradually changed into someone whose reaction in time of need was to turn to God. That reaction served her well when - just as she was faced with a huge crisis in her personal life - a heavily armed gunman managed to breach the security in the school where she worked, barking out orders and threatening the lives of hundreds of students, staff, and police. In that moment, the strength and reliance on God that had been developed in Antoinette over a lifetime was gloriously used to avert disaster. Instead of bemoaning the many difficulties she has faced, or regretting that filling in for someone else landed her in the "hot seat", Antoinette instead chooses to rejoice that she had been fitted by God for His purposes.
What an example! I enjoyed this book, not only for the riveting tale, but because of the many Scripture verses that are included to "prove" the fundamental truth that God is sovereign, loving, and active in our lives, working as the Master Potter to form us into vessels which can be used by Him. An inspiring read!
