Chapters in the Student Text provide objectives, a list of new terms, helpful tips on note-taking, and section/end-chapter assessments that include terms/people/places questions, as well as comprehen sion/critical thinking queries and writing activities. A "Document-Based Assessment" features documents with multiple-choice questions that help students to analyze and practice critical reading skills; an associated writing task helps students learn to compare, contrast, and draw conclusions.
Units focus on early civilizations through the world today, with individual lessons covering Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, The Byzantine Empire, Muslim Civilizations, the Global Age, The American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, the Rise of Totalitarianism, WII, Post-1945 Regional Conflicts, and more. Essential Questions in the text tackle tough topics, including human rights, genocide, dictatorship, nationalism, revolution, political systems, cultural diffusion, belief systems, and other important "big ideas." Infographics, timelines, photographs, and maps provide a strong visual component to the text.
The Reading and Note Taking Study Guide with Concept Connector Journal is designed to help students learn to organize and analyze information as they read. Following the structure of the text, each section within each chapter includes a note-taking guide and summary; journal worksheets for the "Essential Questions" are also provided. Note-Taking Study Guides include one or two graphic organizers that apply different reading skills, while section summaries highlights important information, and review and reading questions that provide an opportunity to recall facts and review content. 388 consumable (non-reproducible), perforated, pages, softcover.
The Teacher's Guide includes a classroom pacing guide, tips on differentiating instruction, and advice on effective assessments and classroom implementation. Each chapter begins with a planner that organizes objectives, topics, resources (with page numbers), and assignments. A "professional development" page provides background information on the topic with teaching advice. Reduced-size student pages are reproduced with teacher notes in the margin, including bibliography notes, differentiated learning instruction, chapter-level resources, previews, board-writing, scripted questions (with answers), objectives, map skills, activity ideas, and other helpful instructions. Codes throughout the book can be used to access additional online resources. 1261 pages, hardcover.
Homeschoolers, please note: There are references throughout the student text and teacher's guide to "Witness History" Audio CDs and "teacher's express" CD-ROMs and a "student express" CD-ROM. These are not included in this homeschool kit, and the publisher currently does not currently sell them to homeschoolers.
In addition, please note that this curriculum teaches evolution and an old-earth model.
