Publisher's Description

Bath, England 1810

At twenty-eight, Alethea Sutherton is past her prime for courtship; but social mores have never been her forté. She might be a lady, but she is first and foremost a musician.

In Regency England, however, the violin is considered an inappropriate instrument for a lady. Ostracized by society for her passion, Alethea practices in secret and waits for her chance to flee to the Continent, where she can play without scandal.

But when a thief ’s interest in her violin endangers her and her family, Alethea is determined to discover the enigmatic origins of her instrument … with the help of the dark, brooding Lord Dommick.

Scarred by war, Dommick finds solace only in playing his violin. He is persuaded to help Alethea, and discovers an entirely new yearning in his soul.

Alethea finds her reluctant heart drawn to Dommick in the sweetest of duets . . . just as the thief’s desperation builds to a tragic crescendo . . .

Lady Aletha Sutherton has a passion for playing the violin, a profession that is frowned upon in high English society. Because of an incident in her past, Aletha has sever trust with men, so when someone brakes into her home seemingly to take her precious violin, Aletha must put her trust in one of England most capable investigators.

Lord Dominick has seen his share of death and destruction. During Englands most recent war, he has to come face to face with the horrors of what war can bring. Now that he has return home all he wants to do is put his past behind him and give his sister her season in society. When a friend a fiend mentions Aletha and the attempted theft of her precious violin he is intrigued and offers himself to Aletha as a body guard.

I adored Aletha and Dominic, both as individuals and as a couple. Each had issues that hung over them, yet each were willing to begin to trust the other as they work together to solve the mystery.

This is the first book for me by this author and I cant wait to read more by this author. She has woven a captivating story with very well written character and a story line that is a true page turner.

Alethea and Dommick are two people who love creating music, particularly on their violins. But they are also two people with things from their past that haunt them and make them unable to truly trust in love. This engaging story is set in the Regency time period in England, full of strict social structure and rules. Add in a mysterious foe, who will do anything to procure Aletheas precious violin, and you have a truly enjoyable story filled with love, deception, and danger.

When I first began reading Prelude for a Lord, it took me a little time to get all of the characters straight. There are quite a few of them. But once I reasoned out who the various characters were, I realized that each one was important to the telling of the story.

I really liked Alethea and Dommick, who each had things that hung over them. For Alethea, she has only truly been loved by two people, one is her half-sister and the other was a woman who was a music mentor to Alethea. She certainly never received any affection by the male members of her family. Learning to trust Lord Dommick is tricky when men have only treated her cruelly. This has also impacted Alethea spiritually. She has only ever witnessed hypocritical people who claim to love God and then treat others badly. She has much to learn in this book about Gods true love, and the process she goes through is beautiful.

Lord Dommick simply wants to shed the past horrors of the battlefield that have their hold over him, and he hopes to give his sister a successful society season. Both are easier said than done. Dommick is such a great character. He is strong, but feels weak in many ways due to things he witnessed in battle. The way he cares for his mother and sister, and truly loves them, speaks volumes to Alethea about the kind of man he is.

I really loved this book! It became so enthralling once Alethea and Dommick were thrown together to investigate the history of Aletheas very old and precious violin. Dommicks friends provide lightheartedness to the story and the attraction between Alethea and Dommick is wonderful. The romance that builds between these two is just perfect. There are so many sigh-worthy moments between them!

The mystery is intriguing throughout the story, culminating in an exciting conclusion. I loved every path this story took and I am excited to see that this is the first book in the Gentlemen Quartet series. Thoroughly enjoyable. (5 stars)

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through BookLook Bloggers, in exchange for an honest review.

Alethea Sutherton is a 28 year old spinster. She has always bucked the social norms of the day for women. Where most refined women learn to play the pianoforte, Alethea's instrument of choice is a violin. Unheard of for a refined woman to play such an inappropriate instrument. Recently kicked out of her family home by a male heir, Alethea has moved to Bath, England to live with her aunt. While there she is accosted on the street by a man who insists he has a buyer for her prized violin. When someone breaks into her aunts home Alethea knows she must find help in finding out the origins of her violin. She turns to Lord Dommick.

Bayard is still recovering from the horrors of war, but is also faced with trying to save his reputation for the sake of his sister and mother. Challenged by one of the gentry to help Alethea find out about her violin, it isn't long before he is worried about the safety of his family and Alethea. Someone is definitely after the violin and will stop at nothing to procure it.

Alethea is headstrong and has a deep wariness for all men because of the treatment she received at the hands of her father and brother. Lord Dommick is being chased by demons from the war. Will they learn to trust each other with their hurts and find healing in the love of a Savior who promises to be with them always?

This is Camille Elliot's first Regency novel. I enjoyed it very much. It felt to me to have a gothic flare to it that I really enjoyed. As I've mentioned in previous posts I am a huge romance/suspense fan and found that Prelude for a Lord held those elements. I loved Dommick and Alethea's characters. It was fun to read as their care for each other grew through the story. They fit each other well in that Alethea was just the woman to help Dommick through his tormented dreams. The mystery of the violin and the thieves that wanted to get their hands on it kept the suspense building throughout the book. I also appreciate the element of faith that both characters develop throughout the story. If you are a fan of Regency romance then I definitely would recommend this be put on your list.
