Author Bio

Mark Dever (PhD, Cambridge University) is senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, and pastor of 9Marks Ministries. Dever has authored over a dozen books and speaks at conferences nationwide.

J. Ligon Duncan is Chancellor and John E. Richards professor of Systematic and Historical Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary. He is also Senior Minister of the historic First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Mississippi, Chairman of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of America.

R. Albert Mohler Jr. (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as the ninth president of Southern Seminary and as the Joseph Emerson Brown Professor of Christian Theology. Considered a leader among American evangelicals by Time and Christianity Today magazines, Dr. Mohler hosts a daily radio program for the Salem Radio Network and also writes a popular daily commentary on moral, cultural, and theological issues. Both can be accessed at

C. J. Mahaney is the senior pastor of Sovereign Grace Church of Louisville. He has written, edited and contributed to numerous books, including Proclaiming a Cross-Centered Theology; Don't Waste Your Sports; and Sex, Romance and the Glory of God. C. J. and his wife, Carolyn, are the parents of three married daughters and one son, and the happy grandparents to twelve grandchildren.

John MacArthur has served as the pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, since 1969. He is known for his verse-by-verse expository preaching, and his pulpit ministry has extended around the world via his daily radio program, Grace to You. He has also written or edited nearly four hundred books and study guides. MacArthur serves as the president of The Master’s College and Seminary, a four-year liberal arts Christian college. He and his wife, Patricia, live in Southern California and have four grown children.

John Piper (DTheol, University of Munich) is the founder and teacher of and the chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary. He served for 33 years as the senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is the author of more than 50 books, including Desiring God, Don’t Waste Your Life, This Momentary Marriage, Bloodlines, and Does God Desire All to Be Saved?

R. C. Sproul (Drs, Free University of Amsterdam) serves as senior minister of preaching and teaching at Saint Andrew’s Chapel in Sanford, Florida, and is the founder and president of Ligonier Ministries. He has taught at numerous colleges and seminaries, has written over seventy books, and is featured daily on Renewing Your Mind, an international radio broadcast.

When you hear names like Mahaney, Piper, MacArthur, and Sproul, the expectation is that whatever this involves it will probably be good. And let me say, it is. Preaching the Cross is an excellent book that covers a lot of ground.
The shofar has been blown to pastors, calling us to what is supposed to be first in our lives. Priorities in our personal life and in preaching are a must. Pure doctrine and engaging the culture with Christ have to be at the forefront. And preaching for the glory of God and understanding that our calling is a high calling is peppered throughout. I found that it encouraged me in my calling.
Ministry activities have a way of distracting us if we are not grounded in the Word, remembering our true priorities. This books has behind it men with a great deal of ministry experience, who give strong exhortations to remain faithful to the calling and cover various aspects of ministry that need bolstering. All these essays revolve around topics like priorities, preaching Christ in the Old Testament, and preaching with the culture in view grace the pages of this "read every year kind of book."
Mark Dever reminds readers that Paul said in 1 Corinthians 4 that God is the One who judges us (p. 22). Though we read this every time we turn to this passage, it helps to be reminded of this. We cannot be fearful or men or seek to please them, hence Dever's first sentence: "Churches today must be recovered."
My only question for this book would be its title Preaching the Cross. The title gives readers the impression that the content of the book will be centered around the cross. This is not the case. That said, this book will not disappoint. It is one to have in your library. – Todd Upchurch, Christian Book

This book refocuses your attention to the Lordship and Sovereignty of Christ. Most christians have become me focus and wandered from the truth that it is all about Christ and He is to be worshipped totally.

I am grateful to have stumbled upon this book. "Preaching the Cross" is a compilation of messages delivered at the 2006 "Together for the Gospel" conference. There are relatively few meaningful works in print intended to challenge and recharge the preaching batteries of those who are entrusted with faithfully communicating the message of the cross every Sunday. Therefore, this small volume is welcomed. Seven messages are given by seven well-known reformed pastors, who each approach the minister's task from different perspectives. Mark Dever, J. Ligon Duncan III, Albert Mohler, R.C. Sproul, John Piper, C.J. Mahaney, and John MacArthur each provide healthy meat to feed the preacher who may be going through a period of spiritual malnourishment in his own ministry. In an appendix at the end of the book is a "Together for the Gospel Affirmation and Denial" statement, containing eighteen articles and signed by Dever, Duncan, Mohler, and Mahaney, the principle authors. Pastors, don't skim over this too quickly! Use it as a checklist to reassess your own commitment to preaching the cross. I was challenged and greatly encouraged through the charges found within these messages. Would look forward to reading subsequent volumes if they are available.

A great reminder of the purpose of a pastor! The cross is the focus of our faith, and should be the focus of the church! These men are godly men who bring it all together to encourage pastors to preach truth. Recommended read especially for pastors!
