I love this book! I pray that you will read it and experience the power of prayer in your life.

Rick Hamlin is a praying man, for whom praying is as natural as breathing. In the years Ive known him Ive often asked myself how he does it. Now Ive got an answer. Ricks amazing book, 10 Prayers You Cant Live Without, is full of bold insight and practical wisdom about the practice that is the very breath of our spiritual lives. The fact is, the more I learn about Rick the more I learn about prayer.
- Edward Grinnan, Editor-in-Chief of Guideposts and author of The Promise of Hope.
Here are ten words to describe Ten Prayers You Cant Live Without: Charming. Inspiring. Liberating. Delightful. Engrossing. Moving. Wise. Healing. Thoughtful. Beautiful.
- Bob Hostetler, author of Jordon River Anthology.
Prayer has long been, for me, more a source of worry than of comfort or strength. I dont pray as often as Id like or as meaningfully. With insights and instruction woven almost invisibly through his little compendium of prayer stories, Hamlin not only transformed my prayer habits but banished my insecurities about prayer. To try to pray is to pray, he reassures in the very first sentence. By the end of his book, under his gentle tutelage, I was trying all the time.
- Patty Kirk, author of The Gospel of Christmas and A Field Guide to God.
Whether youre a newcomer to prayer or a lifelong prayer warrior encountering an occasional dry spell, 10 Prayers You Cant Live Without is a book you cant live without. From his own daily appointment with God on the subway to the experiences of people he knowsboth famous and unknownRick Hamlin has distilled guidelines to make every prayer a true conversation with God.
- Elizabeth Sherrill, author of All the Way to Heaven.
Gain a deeper understanding of the privilege and power of prayer with 10 fascinating chapters.
In his new book, 10 Prayers You Cant Live Without, Rick Hamlin celebrates the idea that prayer isnt something you have to do, but rather is something you get to do. Prayers is a gift that we can use on our own, anytime and anyplace. And yet we can deepen and enrich our personal prayer life by listening to the life-changing and heartwarming experiences of others, and finding out what Scripture has to tell us about the divine connection with our Heavenly Father.
Join Rick on a journey through ten ways of praying that will help expand how you think about prayer and draw you closer to God. Youll find new joy in letting go of the things that trouble you, and youll rest peacefully knowing that God hears you and cares deeply about your every need. Not only is this engaging book a pleasure to read, it offers comfort, wisdom and practical insights about how God hears us, loves us, and works in our lives to bring us closer to Him.
Q: Your career at Guideposts magazine has spanned almost three decades. How has your position at Guideposts as executive editor impacted your outlook on prayer?
A: When you see me in my office, surrounded by a sea of yellow post-it notes filled with prayer requests from people around the world, you get a quick snapshot of all the ways Ive been blessed. Praying for others and encouraging them in prayer has taken me on a wonderful journey, an exhilarating adventure. I like to memorize their requests and who they are so I can think about them when Im not at my desk. Ive learned to go out on a limb when I pray for others, to take a risk, to be passionate the way Paul is in his prayers. In my work here, Ive also been expected to ask boldly, sometimes brazenly, about other peoples prayer lives, and that has blessed me and helped me grow in my Christian faith. Hearing their stories, their challenges and victories refreshes and encourages me every day.
Q: You give your readers a new perspective on the definition of prayer what constitutes prayer, what it is, what its not. Can you expand upon this, helping readers understand your view of praying without ceasing?
A: Talking to God can happen in a lot of different ways certainly, it can be quiet and contemplative, but it can also be a conversation as you would talk to a friend. Pour out your soul, say whats on your mind, dont censor yourself Hes listening and knows exactly what youre going through. Also, reading Scripture, especially the Psalms, captures our thoughts, speaks to our souls and, in fact, constitutes prayer. A prayer can inspire an act, but the act itself can also be a prayer. It can be bold and action-packed like a hug, a song, a scripture verse, a service, writing someone a note or letter or doing an out-of-the-blue favor; all these connect us with our Maker. When we say Yes to God and then go on to act on His nudgings, on the promptings of the Holy Spirit, then were on our way to praying without ceasing throughout our lives.
Q: You exhort readers not to get stuck in prayer paralysis. Could you further discuss the cure for this malady?
A: Sometimes in your prayer life it can be hard to translate a good feeling into an action. You know what God wants you do to but youre not sure you can do it. You get stuck. Well, as someone once said, Be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid. When you say Hi! to God, God will say Hi! right back to you. Step out in faith and you will be helped in more ways than you know. Prayer is a tool to make you stronger, braver, bigger, and lovelier in a word. Prayer simply expands your world. You learn to care about people you would never have known otherwise, and you find out what makes them tick. You grow in your ability to love. This prayer in action cures your prayer paralysis quickly!
HollyMagCovina, CAAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Book of Answered PrayersApril 13, 2013HollyMagCovina, CAAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This isn't really a book about how to pray, but more of a book reminding you WHY you should pray. The author tells many stories from his personal life as well as stories he has learned in his role as Executive Editor of Guideposts Magazine. There were many stories that brought me to tears at seeing God's faithful response to prayer.
The author does talk about different types of prayer, such as the Lord's Prayer and how people when faced with difficult circumstances that found peace in those words. He also talked about the "No" prayer that we pray when the unthinkable has happened. He reminds us that God hears those prayers as well.
This book is a great reminder that God does hear our prayers and we don't have to wax eloquent to find God's peace and answers. This is not a how-to book, if that's what you are looking for you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for a book where the author is transparent about his own struggles and the victories he has seen through prayer, this book will definitely encourage you.

Rick is executive editor at Guideposts. He's talked to lots of people about prayer and shares many of their stories (and his own) here.
He has attempted to break down prayer into categories he has found most helpful. He doesn't expect us to pray the way he does. He does hope to expand out thinking about prayer.
Here are a few concepts about prayer I learned from this book. Prayer can be a way of processing history or processing news, putting it back into the hands of God. It is important for children to hear their parents pray. Include interruptions right into your prayers. Prayer is a conversation you can have all day. Concentrate on expressing gratitude for what you already have, not what you are fervently wishing for.
Here are a few quotes to give you an idea of Rick's thoughts. "If I could only pass on one piece of advice about prayer, this would be it: Pick a time and place for prayer and try to do it every day." (26) "When you're not sure what to pray or how to pray say a prayer for someone else." (48) A lesson from The Lord's Prayer: "It's as though Jesus is urging his disciples, here's what you should do when you pray: Be direct. Make it simple. Don't be long-winded. Cover all the bases. Forgive. Relinquish. Pray for others as you pray for yourself." (72)
Rick affirms that there are certainly more than ten kinds of prayers. "I believe there are as many prayers as there are people in the world," he writes. (237) Pray, he advises, and don't say you don't know how. "You were made to pray." (238)
If you like the kinds of encouraging stories that appear in Guideposts, you'll like the stories Rick tells in this book.
Questions for Reflection have been added at the end of the book so this would a good book for a prayer group discussion.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from a publicity group for the purpose of this review.
