David Hutchison4 Stars Out Of 5June 27, 2002David HutchisonThe Prayer of Jesus focuses not on worldly gain but on the will of God. Hemphill "digs in" to this model prayer without becoming difficult to understand. The book is practical and easy to read, helped tremendously by the memorable stories. If we can learn to pray with eyes set on the Father and all that he wants for us, our lives will be truly changed.

Tell us a little about yourself. I was born the son of a Baptist minister. I accepted Christ as my personal savior when I was 9 years of age. I attended Wake Forest University on a football scholarship. I have received post-graduate degrees from Southern Baptist Theological seminary and Cambridge University. I pastored for 15 years before coming to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. I have served as President for the past eight years. I am married to Paula and have three grown daughters.
What was your motivation behind this project? I have always desired a more intimate and powerful prayer life. Thus this project was a personal pilgrimage. At the same time I discovered that the desire for intimacy in prayer was a major desire for laity in our churches and students on our campus.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? This book is not a book about the Lord's Prayer that one will read and place on the shelf. It explores the prayer in terms of how Jesus lived His daily life free of anxiety and with a focus on His Father's name, His Father's Kingdom, and His Father will. The first three statements of the prayer are not petitions but commitments. I promise to hallow God's name in my actions, words, and deeds. I ask Him to show me His Kingdom activity and I promise to join Him in that activity. As I pray for bread, forgiveness, and victory over evil, I pray for all I need to fulfill my three commitments. The seven accountability questions in the last chapter make this material very practical. The book can be used for family devotions, small group study, or personal enrichment. An audio version, a video study guide, and a prayer journal will be available this fall.
