Practicing the Presence of Jesus: Experience the Gift of His Friendship
Walking & Talking with Jesus
I picked this book because it was written by Wally Armstrong. I'm not really into golf but I work with a bunch of men who are and I actually know who Wally Armstrong is. Cool! This is a small easy to read book where Wally talks about reaching out and talking to Jesus as a friend. As if he is there with you everyday and you can see him (although he does explain that you should do what is comfortable for you). He uses his own experiences in his Christian life to show how this could work for you and how it drew him closer to God. Wally also describes how this change helped him to become less about doing the actions and "pleasing" God and more about having an intimate relationship with Jesus.
I really enjoyed the book because Wally speaks to you and explains things in a common way. The book is not overly theological. What was great is that it is in a way a self-help book but it also is quick and to the point. I do honestly believe that I have already been doing these things. However, what Wally did inspire in me is to speak with Jesus as a friend more regularly, regardless of how I'm feeling, and to make this a habit as opposed to an on-again, off-again, only when I'm feeling great relationship. One thing I have to give Wally kudos for is having the foresight to let you know that you may or may not have an emotional response to this interaction with Jesus. I appreciate that as my belief is that sometimes you may have an emotional response and sometimes not. It doesn't mean you are more or less closer to God.
This book would make a great gift. Think stocking stuffer for Christmas.

Treating Jesus As A Friend
Wally Armstrong has presented a beautiful insight into his personal relationship with Christ.
I especially loved the story of the old Scotchman, he had a chair in his room just for Christ to sit it. It reminded him to keep Christ close and have ongoing conversations with him. When he passed away his hand was on the chair....he traveled along with Jesus! There are many pictures of this empty chair throughout the book. A reminder to keep the conversations going.
I think maybe the Amish or Amish Woman wearing their reminder of a prayer cap is an excellent reminder...keep talking to God.
This book is a good reminder that our Lord is looking at us as Friends...he gave us his ultimate gift. The Author is sharing a wonderful gift with us. Enjoy, and savor.

A Way To Experience Jesus More Personally
Wally Armstrong in his new book âÂÂPracticing the Presence of Jesusâ published by Summerside Press shows us how to have a daily, personal relationship with Jesus.
Experience the Gift of His Friendship
Do you want to experience Jesus as real? When we look at Jesusâ life on earth, we see Him calling people to simply know Him. He made no demand on them to believe theological propositions. âÂÂFollow meâ was the invitation which they accepted. They got to know and communicate with the real person. There is a big difference between believing something is true and experiencing it as real. This is the story of how Wally Armstrong learned to communicate with the real person of Jesus in his everyday life. Armstrong experiences Jesus up close and personal and introduces readers to the same experience. In a conversational manner, he explores what it is like to have a relationship with Jesus as if He is sitting right there next to us. He keeps an empty chair ready and imagines Jesus sitting beside him as they talk.
Jesus said, âÂÂI am with you always.â That is a very comforting verse however they are words that we are not always aware of. There is a difference between knowing Jesus is with us and being aware that Jesus is with us. What do I mean? Let me put it like this. No matter where you live you have a Kitchen. It is always there. Now, suppose, you are in your Living Room intensely focused on watching your game on the TV. The Kitchen is still there but you are not aware of it as your entire focus is on the game. Commercial comes on, you want a snack, now all of a sudden you are aware of the presence of the Kitchen. As the verse tells us Jesus is always with us however a lot of times our focus is not on Him and we are not aware of His presence. Wally Armstrong has given us a little book that helps us focus our attention on Jesus so that we are aware of His presence all the time.

cultivating faith-filled imagination
Jesus Christ is the greatest thing that could ever happen to you. Yet there is a gift often laid aside by modern Christians â the gift of the offer from Jesus to become his friend.
Perhaps you are like Wally, trying in his own strength to be more Christlike. He realized one day that Jesus was beside him offering the transforming gift of friendship.
âÂÂWe have missed the gift of simple friendship, even though that friendship was the first thing Jesus offered his disciples before he ever taught them to minister or schooled them in theology.â (30)
Wally says this important step of accepting Jesus as friend is the foundation of discipleship. He refers to the impact of Weatherhead's book, The Transforming Friendship.
Wally writes about the âÂÂexercise of imaginationâ by which one may âÂÂgrow into a faith in Christ's intimate presenceâ that is âÂÂstrong and unshakable.â (38) He envisioned Jesus beside him. He began to read the Bible with Jesus sitting beside him. It may seem awkward at first, Wally admits, but the more you envision Jesus the more natural the friendship becomes.
Wally shares his own journey, his ups and downs in living in friendship with Jesus. He waited nine years to write this book. He wanted to make sure what he was experiencing was consisten with the Scripture and the testimonies of other believers. He points out that he means no irreverence to Jesus and does not want to downplay Jesus, King and Ruler of the universe. (84)
Jesus does want to speak to you, Wally says. âÂÂWe simply need to take the time to listen.â (44) He invites you to participate in cultivating a faith-filled imagination. âÂÂThere is always more to see and more to learn of Jesus.â (81)
