The call to preach is also a call to prepare.
Too many pastors have refrained from preparation while they await the Holy Spirit to do all of the work. God expects preachers to prepare sermons as much as possible and allow Him to prepare the preachers.
Join Dr. Jerry Vines and Dr. Jim Shaddix as they achieve a balanced approach to sermon preparation in Power in the Pulpit. This book combines the essential perspectives of a pastor of forty years with another who devotes daily time to training pastors in the context of theological education. Power in the Pulpit is practical preaching instruction in line with a tradition that sees expository preaching as a paramount and frequent event in the life of the local church.
Power in the Pulpit is the combined work of Dr. Vines's two earlier publications on preaching: A Practical Guide to Sermon Preparation (Moody Publishers, 1985) and A Guide to Effective Sermon Delivery (Moody Publishers, 1986). Dr. Shaddix carefully organizes and supplements the material to offer this useful resource, which closes the gap between classroom theory and what a pastor actually experiences in his weekly sermon preparation.
JIM SHADDIX (BS, Jacksonville State University; M.Div., D.Min., Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; Ph.D., New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as Professor of Preaching at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC, occupying the W. A. Criswell Chair of Expository Preaching. He has pastored churches in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Colorado, and also served as Dean of the Chapel and Professor of Preaching at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA. Jim is the author of The Passion Driven Sermon (Broadman & Holman, 2003) and co-author of Power in the Pulpit with Jerry Vines (Moody, 1999). Jim and his wife, Debra, focus much of their attention on discipling and mentoring young leaders and spouses. They have three grown children.

Jason Cruise, TodaysPreacher.Com5 Stars Out Of 5January 23, 2001Jason Cruise, TodaysPreacher.ComVines and Shaddix, two super preachers, have put together a super book for any preacher/teacher. It covers just about every area of expository preaching - somewhat similar to John MacArthur's classic "Rediscovering Expository Preaching." It has a fair amount of technical instruction on preaching, but I found that it was not necessarily academicaly technical in that you do not have to read the book in one hand and have a dictionary in the other!!! Moreover, it is full of well thought out, practical tips that will surely enhance your preaching. The authors make a good case for quality expository preaching. All in all, the book does well to hold high the standards of soberly preaching the Word of God ... always a good trait to see in a preaching publication!!!Bottom line: it's a hit!!! A little pricy perhaps, but you'll be glad you bought it ... I was!!
