I did not want to get a writing curriculum because I personally don't like to write, and I knew that my daughter absolutely despised it, so I thought, "Why torture ourselves?" However, I knew that if she decided to attend college, she should have some writing skills. I seriously didn't think it would work, but I finally decided to take the plunge, and boy, was I surprised! Writing is still not her favorite subject, but she is actually writing papers, without complaining, and they are, to my amazement, quite good. Thank you, Sharon Watson, for composing a curriculum that works!

The Power in Your Hands explains writing in an engaging and enjoyable format. This book gives clear instructions and many great examples. My 9th grader and I look forward to reading each chapter together. Not only has it taught my child how to write, but it also brings up many discussions between us about ethics and morals that we face in our era.
This book can be used for 1 or 2 years. Depending on your preferred schedule, you can pretty well do one chapter every week or two. We chose to read the chapters together, which only takes 35-40 min. After that my child works on the assignment for the rest of the week or more, depending on what is assigned. If the teacher is faithful to grade and the student applies himself he will be well prepared for the SAT and college after finishing this course.
I highly recommend purchasing the teachers key also. It will provide you with a grading format and many sample papers. I need to be able to see where my child is in their writing and having other students work to compare to is what makes this book worthwhile to me. It has a wealth of teaching info in it also.
If you want to find writing to be a joy, not a drudgery, use this book in your high school curriculum. I think students and parents can easily relate to it and you might even have some great conversations with your child as well.

The textbook was easy to understand, and the use of examples from novels and published authors taught and inspired me. I loved the conversational tone and light humor. Students who use this book will see, as I did, how stress-free and even fun writing can be! They'll also discover the power of writing, beyond mere technicality or skill. I feel like I have been better prepared for high school, the SAT essay and college. To students: I encourage you to consider Sharon's book if you're entering, or are already in, high school. You'll find that it is a great help with high school writing!

Tell us a little about yourself. I'm the author of JUMP IN, Apologia Educational Ministries' popular middle school writing curriculum. And I'm a real homeschool mom. When I taught my three children in our homeschool, I studied learning styles so I could present lessons to my children in ways they could understand. When I began to teach composition and literature to other homeschool students, I learned more things of importance. First, students of many abilities attended my classes. Some had never written an essay before; others showed real skill in communicating through essays. I learned how to catch the new writers up with their classmates while teaching material of substance to all. Second, I learned how to teach, in the same class, those who are creatively minded and those who are literal/mathematically/logically based. Third, I studied the scientifically proven value of humor in the classroom as a means to relax the class and defuse the fear of writing. All of this is reflected in THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL.
What was your motivation behind this project? Some high school subjects feel heavy on our shoulders because they seem so impossible to teach. A writing class can feel like that, so I created a course that teaches itself. I wanted to lift the teaching burden by creating a curriculum written to the student, with daily lessons the homeschool or private school teacher does not have to teach if he or she does not want to. I also wanted to show students in a step-by-step approach just how easy writing can be. In addition, I wanted to expose high school writers to many kinds of nonfiction writing, using real students' homework and professional writers as examples, so students would be ready for high school, college, or professional writing. Equipping teachers to grade their students' work was important to me, too, so I included an extensive grading section in the teacher's guide, complete with grading forms, assignment checklists, and examples of student writing.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? There's no need to fear writing class anymore! THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL equips the teacher and student to have a successful writing experience.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Years ago when my children were approaching high school, I began to freak out about teaching the higher sciences--until I found Dr. Jay Wile's Exploring Creation with Chemistry. What a super book! It is written to the student in a conversational tone. The teacher checks in every day but does not have to teach it. And it is so understandable. What a relief! When I wrote THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS, I wanted to recreate that conversational tone for the student and the feeling of relief for the parent/teacher.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: If our Christian teens do not learn how to communicate effectively with their culture, who is left to influence it? Let's equip our teens to ace the SAT essay, write well for high school, succeed in college, communicate in their professional lives, and speak clearly to a culture that desperately needs God and His truth.
