While we have not completed POAG yet, we have finished the first 3 units (and I have read through the remainder of the guide more than once). My daughter and I have been very pleased. Lessons have been fun, and on the level a child can understand and relate to. This means true learning has taken place! We have not used the craft books or cook books yet our experience has been very full. The internet search engine can provide you with crafts and recipes if you so desire. If you follow the suggestions of the author there will be plenty to fill you school time. The Welcome to ________'s World books are wonderful. In addition to the information, they offer photos and maps of the time periods and locations. These are out of print, but are easily located at used book sites for generally reasonable prices. I have heard many libraries carry them as well. If one chooses to not use the Welcome books a standard text or simple research can replace them. Samples are great, but beyond what you see there you will also find unit long projects and bio suggestions throughout . One example of a project was a game my dd had to help create coming up with questions and answers based on our lessons. We included geography, history, science and comp questions based on the AG and the lessons. When certain topics come up in our daily lives my daughter recalls things she has learned from her POAG lessons. This study is deceptively light. While not overwhelming, there is work to be done. But the way it is presented makes it a wonderful experience your child is not likely to forget any time soon.

We like the Unit study alot. However, I would like to see the quizzes or teacher's guide from American Girl packaged with the Unit study book. The guides from what I have been able to learn aren't in print anymore. Also the maps that are to go with the series aren't readily available. The base material is great overall.

The American Girl series was created by teacher, Pleasant Rowland to teach American History in a fun and engaging format. Homeschooling mother, Cindy Sotelo has taken Pleasant Rowland's idea a step further to create the "Portraits of American Girlhood" unit study. The study is divided into seven units, one for each American Girl and arranged in chronological order according to their time period. Please note since the publication of this unit study two new American Girls have been introduced, Kaya and Julie. They are not covered in this unit study. The unit study covers social studies, history, grammar, science, math activities and character education. To complete your unit study you will need to have the following items on hand: American Girl book series of each American girl, cookbook/craft book for each American girl, "Welcome to ____'s World" for each American girl. The grade level listed for this unit study is grades 2-5. However based on our experience I would recommend it for grades 4-5.
