I love this book. I read it every 6 months. It is so rare to find a wonderful piece of fiction that is also spiritually encouraging and challenging. READ IT. you will not be able to put it down. when you finish it give it to your teenage daughter.
Deborah Galiley has written a masterful recounting of the Bible story from the book of Judges about Deborah and Jael, one of the lesser known or understood stories. She takes us into the lives of these two women and shows us what it must've been like for Deborah who was a wife and mother as well as prophetess. Details of her life with her children and her husband make her someone we can easily identify with. Jael, an abused wife who is taken far from her family and people to live with pagans is also drawn with empathy and a realization that as tough as her life is, she has been brought by God to be where she needs to be for "such a time as this." Very well done. I recommend it especially for those who want a better understanding of one of the darker chapters in the Bible.
Polished Arrows entwines the lives of Devorah, the Prophetess of Israel and Jael, the wife of Hever the Kentite in a way that hasnt been done before. We get to see these two women grow in their lives and their faith to the point where they are themselves the weapons of the LORD God of Israel. Polished Arrows is true to the Tanakh account, but expands the lives and times of the people to let us observe their faith and power. Both men and women will enjoy this novel and the courageous characters who fill it. The world of Jael changes when she is taken from her family as the bride of Hever the Kenite. She leaves everything she knew and loved to become the wife of a cruel man of the desert. Devorah lives in peace and comfort with her family in Ramah. She grows in strength with the LORD God, marries, and raises a family, then her life changes tooshe is called to become a prophetess and Judge in Israel. You will hear the battle cries and the howl of the shofars as the forces of the Canaanites and the army of Devorah and Barak come together. This is battle they have prepared for for twenty years. This is the battle to determine the fate of Israel. We pray with them that the depth of their faith sustains them and that leaves a message for readers in this time too. If want to taste a slice of the times of the Judges, read Polished Arrows--you'll cry out along with Deborah Galiley's characters "Baruch ha Shem."
