The Pocket Guide to the Apocalypse by Jason Boyett is laugh-out-loud funny. In the wake of the Left Behind phenomenon, many may be wondering if they will make the cut, why there is a cut in the first place, and how to not be so frightened about said impending cut.

Jason Boyett is a writer for Relevant Magazine who combines “modern spirituality,” “practical stuff” and “pop culture” in an “oddly intriguing stew.” Chapters include: The Apocolyptionary (A Glossary of the End); Fun with Eschatology; Know Your Potential Antichrists; and Armageddon Grab-Bag. With everything from death metal, Charro as pope, doomsday prophets (who weren’t too prophetic), and history, this satirical rendition of the end of all things is a much needed remedy for overly serious Christians everywhere.

The humor will be considered irreverent to some, but most will appreciate it. With doomsday prophets running around since 2000 B.C., Boyett has lots of material ripe for the picking. Explaining some of the mystifying language in Revelation while making readers laugh is no small feat. The style is akin to Fulghum or Lamott, very accessible. This is a book you’ll want to read to others so they can laugh right along with you. The only problem is, they may have trouble understanding you through the laughter.

No Christian book has ever made me laugh out loud repeatedly. Stephen King’s On Writing is pretty close to Boyett’s wickedly funny style--except in place of the writing info throw in lots of stuff about history and the Bible. The book is too funny to put down and too funny to rush through. Enjoy it. Hopefully, we’ll see more from Boyett in the future.
