While there may be books on marriage that are more thorough, Goins book, Playing Hurt "gets you in the game." While some other books on marriage may delve deeper into the biblical theology of marriage, Playing Hurt focuses on fewer passages so the reader doesn't get buried in an avalanche of cross-references. This is a book which many a man may just read (I don't say that lightly; I realize we live in a culture where most men simply don't read any more, so this is the challenge any author takes on when trying to target the male reader).

Goins builds strongly upon the sports analogy throughout his book. Granted, I enjoy sports (especially football, basketball and golf) and when reading about sports, I thoroughly enjoy motivational stories involving athletes and their endeavors to rise above difficult circumstances. There were times, however, in reading this book that some of the connections to the athletic world grew a little wearying for this reviewer, but let the reader of this review understand: I am simply a casual fan of most sports. I am not a rabid follower of any one sport or any one particular team. Sports is not my life.

That being said, I think many a man will enjoy this inspiring, sports-themed challenge to endure in marriage. It's a message that has, unfortunately, not been getting through to enough husbands in our "me-first" culture. Building upon Ephesians 5's foundational teaching (husbands, Christ is your example for marriageÃ¢ÂÂÃ¢ÂÂperiod), the author then weaves that with sports themes to inspire and challenge men to stay in the "game." Consider Goins that motivational coach who, rather than berating you for doing such a lousy job, picks you up and charges you up to hang in there, stick with it, and "play hurt" because you're always going to have them, so play through them.
