A Place in His Heart by Rebecca DeMarino - a wonderfully written, heartwarming tale that kept me enthralled from the very first page.

This book is over-flowing with faith, hope, love, devotion and family - but also danger and many challenges. There is something for everyone.

Barnabas takes Mary as his wife to be a mother to his children. Because he can never truly love another as long as he carries the pain of losing his first wife, the love of his life, can he and Mary ever truly be happy? The characters are so well written and Ms. DeMarino's writing style truly draws you in...once you start, you won't be able to put the book down.

If you are a fan of Historical Romance, this is definitely the book for you. I look forward to the next book with great anticipation!

I was given this book by bookfun.org in exchange for my honest review.

As I began reading A Place in His Heart, I was immediately captivated by the setting, characters, and authors writing. I was especially thrilled to read the quotation from the Bible in the early part of the book. I sensed the quote was from an old version so I check the front pages and saw that Biblical quotes were from the Geneva Bible, 1599 Edition. Often an author (I am sure bowing to preferences of her readers) uses modern translations or version when they quote the Bible. That, however, is a true turnoff for me. I give Rebecca DeMarino a 10-out-of-10 points for authenticity by delving into a version accurate to the time and place.

Since the story is based on the authors family history dating back to the 1600s, her research into the Horton family is to be commended.

After the first 50 or so pages, the story began to drag and was repetitious at least to this reader. The gist of the story is a young woman is about to be given in marriage to a man she simply does not wish to marry. But another man desires to take her to wife and to be the mother of his two young boys. His wife, Ann, whom he loved greatly, having just recently died. They seem to be agreeable to marriage and the wedding takes place. Soon it becomes evident that Barnabas has not told Mary all. He plans to soon move to The Massachusetts Bay Area to escape the encroaching discipline of the Church of England on those who believe in a Reformed church.

They prepare to leave, travel across the Atlantic, and begin to settle into life in their new home. Much of the story is given over to this period of their life and it seems to drag.

The author writes well and for a debut novel this is a good book. Im giving it a 4-star rating because I felt the writing was good, her research very well done, and for the beautiful cover. I probably would give it a 3-star for not being able to retain my interest, but Ill just boost it to a 4-star since the inattentiveness could simply be my own.

A Place in His Heart was a great book by Rebecca Demarino. It demonstrates that love is possible after being rejected. The historical facts were in great detail and lent the reader to believe they were right there with the writer. The book was well-written and kept the reader on their toes. There was just the right amount of suspense, romance, family, and relationships to keep you entertained. I can not wait to read the next book of Rebecca's.

I recieved this book from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

Benjamin and Mary Horton, the main characters in this historical romance, are the ninth Great-grandparents of author Rebecca DeMarino. She has written of their move from England to Northeast America in the mid-1600s, to escape religious persecution.

DeMarino researched life in that time, studied family history and added well-written imagination to unknown parts of the story. The result is a tale of life with many hardships and joys but none of the blood-pressure-raising terrors or insurmountable dangers and disasters like fill so many modern stories. A welcome change from many modern tales.

Benjamin married Mary after the death of his first wife, needing a mother for his two sons. A godly and good man, he nevertheless struggles with guilt over his first wifes death, a sorrow that interferes with loving Mary fully. Mary does her best to earn Bens love, seemingly to no avail. Sometimes, readers will feel like shaking Benjamin and saying, Wake up, Man.

Romance readers will enjoy this nearly true account of a marriage in the early settlements of our country.

A widower loses his beloved wife. He has two young sons to care for and a business to run. He is overwhelmed. Many of the women in town try to capture his attention. A young girl is opposed to the match her father is trying to make for her. The lonely widower is more appealing. They decide to marry, although he tells her he does not love her. Life becomes difficult and she doubts the wisdom of her choice. Does this sound familiar? Many stories are written in this storyline. The difference in A Place in His Heart, is that it is based on a true story of the authors family. This story took place in the 1600s, when the New World is just being settled. Barney feels he must leave England for religious reasons and start anew on what becomes Long Island. He brings his new wife, Mary, and his two young sons. Life is hard, and Barneys neglect of Mary makes life even harder.

This is a very enlightening glimpse into life in the early settlement of New York. The characters are believable, although the reader may become frustrated with Barney before the resolution. Be sure to read the authors notes at the back of the book to see how she traced her roots to the real Barnabas and Mary.

I received this from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
