This book is an essential book for all Christians to read, in my opinion. It became necessary for me to get the "In Today's English" version, as I was laboring and at a slow pace getting through the original text. I highly recommend THIS version because the Old English writing style(and vocabulary) of John Bunyan is quite difficult to comprehend accurately - more suited to a good reading challenge for a college English major. The overall topic- of the journey that all Christians must take to reach heaven, as well as specific lessons learned all along the way within this great allegorical story- are too important to be missed due to the possibility of a reader giving up completing the book because of archaic language. James H. Thomas's retelling is clear, easily understood, and straightforward. It enabled me to concentrate on the solid content so much better. Get the "In Today's English" and read this book!
John Bunyan's classic Pilgrim's Progress was first published in 1678 and has had tremendous popularity with Christians ever since - in fact, it's the second leading best seller of all time, right behind the Bible. In this wonderful retelling of the Bunyan classic, James Thomas, has rewritten the classic in modern English, making the allegory much easier to read and understand.
In both versions, the allegory is of a Christian's pilgrimage from his realization of his need for Christ to reaching Christ's heavenly city. The allegory serves as a launch pad into scripture and a frank and sincere discussion of the struggles that are common to all who seek to follow Christ. The modern English is helpful to today's readers, but, in my opinion, doesn't detract from Bunyan's original tale.
