Author Bio

JAMES THOMAS is the author of Pilgrim's Progress in Today's English. He is now at home with his Lord.

JOHN BUNYAN (1628-1688) was a Puritan preacher and writer in England. Bunyan had very little schooling. He followed his father in the tinker's trade, and served in the parliamentary army from 1644 to 1647. In 1655, Bunyan became a deacon and began preaching. He experienced marked success from the start and was the pastor of the Bedford church.

Bunyan is the author of The Pilgrim's Progress which he wrote in 1676 while imprisoned for preaching without a license. His numerous other titles include Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and Holy War.

Recently I was clearing out much of my deceased mom's property, which had been sitting in boxes in my garage. When I came upon an old copy of "Pilgrim's Progress", I realized I had never read it, even though I am a Christian, and have heard of the book my whole life. I sat down and began to read it, and immediately determined it was written in Olde English, which I found very difficult to read, but I slogged through from cover to cover, soon realizing why it was the second most read book (Bible #1) in the English language. I got so much inspiration from it, I went online to ChristianBook to see if it was available in American English. It was, and I've blazed through it like a starving man at a feast. Bunyan's original is still the benchmark, but Thomas's retelling holds the same Biblical truths, and is much easier to read. I enjoyed it so much, I bought copies for my entire Bible study small group.

This book is an essential book for all Christians to read, in my opinion. It became necessary for me to get the "In Today's English" version, as I was laboring and at a slow pace getting through the original text. I highly recommend THIS version because the Old English writing style(and vocabulary) of John Bunyan is quite difficult to comprehend accurately - more suited to a good reading challenge for a college English major. The overall topic- of the journey that all Christians must take to reach heaven, as well as specific lessons learned all along the way within this great allegorical story- are too important to be missed due to the possibility of a reader giving up completing the book because of archaic language. James H. Thomas's retelling is clear, easily understood, and straightforward. It enabled me to concentrate on the solid content so much better. Get the "In Today's English" and read this book!
