This Musical is Wonderfully Profound
July 18, 2012
Pilgrim's Progress is a beautiful story of the spiritual struggles of a man called Christian. Christian is handicapped by a heavy burden strapped to his back which cannot be removed. Upon receiving a book from a man named Evangelist, he learns that the city where he resides, (The City of Disstruction), is going to be destroyed by fire. Fleeing for his life, Christian journeys toward The Celestial City, a land ruled by a benevolent and just king. Along the way, Christian encounters a plethra of friends and foes. Whom can he trust, and how will he reach his new home?
This contemporary musical version of Bunyan's classic is truly mesmerizing. I was hooked from the very beginning. This musical will engage young people and hopefully whet their appetites for the original work. The writer's of this adaptation do an exceptional job of emphasizing that salvation is a gift from God: something unmerited and impossible to earn. The play also wonderfully portrays the seductive and ultimate danger of temptation and shows how very susceptible we humans are to its alure. We fall innumerable times, but "The King" picks us up. I particularly loved how one character, Obstinate, is later renamed. Although this version has this character being a female, she proves to play a pivotal role and be more than she seems.
The songs in this show were superb. My favorites were:
1: "The Unseen World".
2: "These are the Words".
3: "Vanity Fair".
The actors/actresses are truly passionate about their roles. It was hard to believe that this show was a high school production. My favorite characters were Goodwill and Faithful.
Please give this riveting musical a chance. God bless you all.
This unique rendition of Bunyan's classic tale, PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, stays faithful to the source material while providing a fresh perspective on the story. Performed live by the High School students of Covenant Life Church, viewers will appreciate the spiritual depth of its content while being entertained by the characters and music. PILGRIM is both professional in quality and relatable to audiences of all ages.
In his review of this DVD, blogger Justin Taylor writes, "One of the things I love about this DVD is the way it's instructing our kids on multiple levels: the centrality of the cross, the sufficiency of the Word, the power of temptation, the beauty of humility and gratitude, the guidance and protection of God, the nature of true forgiveness, the importance of true friendship. It's all done with excellence... I'd encourage parents and youth groups to consider getting a copy of this DVD... I give the whole thing a high recommendation!"
