Throughout the book, Liesel wrestles with the concepts of loyalty, betrayal, honor, and obligation. As the title suggests, she draws parallels between her situation and the story of Judas betraying Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. As her situation grows more complicated, she must sort through conflicting emotions and rely on Gods strength to do the right thing.
Overall, the author tells a compelling, thought-provoking story, but the ending does not completely satisfy the reader. Although the finale successfully builds to a climax, there is nothing special about the standard action scenes at the end. In addition, the last scene leaves unanswered questions regarding the fate of the main antagonist.
The writing quality also needs improvement. Parts of the narration could be clearer and tighter. Despite its shortcomings, Pieces of Silver offers an enjoyable tale that is moving at times. It combines strong elements of romance with intrigue and suspense. Although it targets a female audience, males can appreciate the book as well. Maureen Lang has promise as a storyteller. Lori5 Stars Out Of 5March 3, 2009LoriThis is an excellent book, well worth reading. I won't give you any details about it, since the other reviewers did such a great job at that. My only complaint is that the author does not give a clear reason why the U.S. entered the war. They did so because Germany was threatening to take over the United States. This was found out through the British decoding of a message from Zimmerman to Mexico, trying to get Mexico's help in attacking the U.S., etc. But it is still well worth the read. It is eye-opening in the fact that it makes you realize that prejudice has always been around, ever since sin entered the world!!!

Linda Wichman5 Stars Out Of 5July 17, 2006Linda WichmanPIECES OF SILVER is a dynamic novel! Its been a long time since a historical romance set during WWI has stirred my soul and imagination. But with PIECES OF SILVER, Maureen Lang has succeeded in holding me captive with her no holds barred love story of international espionage, betrayal, and vivid characters that you either love or hate. Furthermore, her descriptive prose makes for the most enjoyable read and her surprise ending leaves you wanting more!

Tell us a little about yourself. I'm a wife and a mom to three great kids. While many parents worry their middle-child might not get enough attention, that's not the case in our house. Our middle- child suffers from Fragile X Syndrome, a genetic form of mental retardation. He naturally requires more attention from everyone, but he's easy to be around. His smile makes up for his lack of words!
What was your motivation behind this project? I've always loved to read, and writing came out of that. I wanted to write a story I wanted to read. This particular story was probably inspired when I was a kid listening to my dad and an uncle talk about war and history. My grandfather fought in The Great War (First World War) and that era has always fascinated me because it's such a mix of history and modern times.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? First, I hope readers will be engaged and entertained by the story. It's nice to have choices for entertainment nowadays that won't conflict with a Christian view of life.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Since I love history, most of my inspiration comes from reading books about real-life history. But I also love a good story, and for that my latest favorites are fiction authors Deeanne Gist, Lynn Austin, and new author Tamera Alexander.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: It's so fun to write books that honor God, because His Word is such a great source of inspiration. A writer can put characters in all kinds of situations, but no matter what their challenge might be, the Bible holds the answer for the best way those characters should ultimately react, and the reason behind failure if they go the wrong direction. Our Creator God knows all about us, as He's revealed in His Word. Fiction that honors God's Word can't help but reflect Him in the pages.
