lacciaMichiganAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A different but effective approach to piano.October 2, 2012lacciaMichiganAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Our teenage daughter is dyslexic and was having trouble reading notes but really wanted to learn to play piano. Her teacher then started her on "Piano for Quitters" by Mark Almond. She moved quickly through that course and on to his second course "Piano for Life." We are very pleased with this approach and would highly recommend it for someone who desires to play the piano but struggles with reading music. We find it helps having a piano teacher but you could teacher yourself at home if you go about it slowly and methodically.
LollyMinneapolis MNAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5My 11 and 9 year old girls love this!September 24, 2011LollyMinneapolis MNAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This program is working well for my 11 and 9 year old girls. They do it on their own and they are enjoying it and making quick progress. It is fun and rewarding. My 6 year old is picking it up too just by being around it.
I would recommend this program. It is saving us alot of money on lessons for now.
MrPestyCatNJAge: 45-54Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Nice DVD tutorial based on chords and progressionsFebruary 2, 2011MrPestyCatNJAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Some people learn to play the piano through formal piano lessons as I've done. You know, find the notes, sight read the simple stuff, and eventually sight read the complex pieces.
Others learn to play chords and chord progressions, often without music, which is the philosophy of this instructor. He starts out with the fundamental major and minor 3rd intervals to construct chords and extends them to 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, etc. The booklet that comes along with the DVD has a list of recommended "sound good" chord progressions.
I often wonder if the sight-readers, such as myself, are better off than the fake book types that add the bass harmony, which is what's conveyed by these DVDs. At least, this DVD set gives a very good foundation into this other way of learning to play. I would recommend this, but it would be more suitable if you already had some basic lessons....perhaps one year's worth of lessons with a good instructor.
The instructor is very good. Not "boring" nor tedious to understand what he's talking about. And the course seems quite complete for what it offers.
Leslie Leib5 Stars Out Of 5March 24, 2009Leslie LeibI bought this mainly for my husband. This is just what we needed since we can't afford lessons for all of us.
Mary Swanson5 Stars Out Of 5October 15, 2008Mary SwansonI'm a Piano Teacher that was introduced to "Piano for Quitters" & "Piano for Life" by one of my Piano Students. I was impressed by Mark Almond's simplistic improvising approach using Chords & Harmony. I currently have a new Adult Student that took lessons as a kid, but as an Adult wanted to do more Improvising with Chords & these DVD's were a "Perfect Match" for her. She can spend hours watching/playing with the DVD's & I can have fun working with her in Piano Lessons. She liked the DVD's so much she bought 4 more.
Q: Is this paired with or instead of "Piano for Quitters"?
"Piano for Quitters" is considered the foundation volume, which would be followed by "Piano for Life".
