If you enjoy alliteration, then Petunia Pepper's Picture Day by Cathy Breisacher will give your tongue a royal workout. The story tells of a young girl who has had poor school pictures her first three years as a student, so this year she is determined to have a beautiful photo. She fixes her hair, puts on a lovely dress, and dons a cute hair ribbon and classy shoes. Alas, she misses the school bus and on the way to get her photo taken she experiences disaster after disaster, from getting rained on to running into a hot dog vender who spills mustard and ketchup on her. Feeling depressed, Petunia continues to school, but soon hears an elderly woman screaming that her pet poodle has run into traffic. Petunia dashes into the street, jumps on the poodle and rescues it. A policeman calls her a hero and her photo lands on the front page of the next day's newspaper. All of the other children in her class want her autograph. The book is laced with words starting with the letter p, such as pancakes, puddles, pictures, personality, pretty, precious, peachy, paraded, and princess. It's a tongue twister, but beyond the fun, the book concludes with a message about how all children are special in God's eyes, whether they have fancy clothes or not. Verses from the Psalms and from Ephesians explain that God creates children in the womb before they are born, and, thus are his treasures.

The artwork by Christian Elden is not overly detailed but it is entertaining, such as in the way it catches Petunia slipping on a banana peel or running after the departing school bus. Youngsters will enjoy the visual images of the pages and the humor and message of the story. – Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
