Petticoat Ranch is a historical novel by Mary Connealy, whose main characters deal with their desire to exact retribution on the men who have killed their loved ones. The message, summed up by Parson Roscoe, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves. Leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.’”
The time is 1867. The place is Mosqueros, Texas. Determination and strength exude from the pores of young mother, Sophie Edwards. Sophie is positive God has given her the strength to keep herself and family alive in the harsh environment of the West. She is also confident that He has given her the determination to find and kill the man who has murdered her husband Cliff.
Enter Clay McClellen. Clay has come in search of his long-lost twin brother, Cliff. Instead of his brother, Clay discovers a sister-in-law and four nieces. Knowing his Christian duty, he marries Sophie, buys the family’s ranch and becomes “Pa” to four little girls, ages two to ten. His early life as a cowhand, a soldier, and a Texas Ranger have prepared him to tackle the ranch, protect his new family, and search for the vigilantes that are terrorizing the area. But those experiences have not prepared him for life with five females.
Petticoat Ranch is a well-written, humorous romance story. Connealy’s characters are true to life. Several times I chuckled as I pictured the scenes that she painted: the squabbles and whines of little girls trying to get their way; the beleaguered, confused expressions of Clay as he attempts to convince his new wife to stay in the house and “do women’s work”; and the often frustrated antics of Sophie as she tries to protect her family.
Although preaching is done by Parson Roscoe, the book does not come across as preachy. Biblical truths are gently sprinkled through the book. Whether you are young or old, sit down, prop your feet up, and get to know the McClellen family. I am sure you will enjoy it. – Victoria H. Borgman, Christian Book

Sophie Edwards has been a widow in Mosqueros, Texas long enough to know exactly what she's doing. She knows how to protect herself and her four daughters, and she has life down pat. That is, until an oddly familiar man nearly kills himself on her property and then has the staunch audacity to turn right around and insinuate her family needs protection. When the family of five women discover who the mystery man is, does Clay McClellan stand a chance against the toughest women he's ever met in his entire life? Do these gals even really need the protection he feels he can offer them as husband and father?

I have heard so much about Connealy's books, and as soon as I was able to get my hands on some of her writing, I quickly found out why she has so many rave reviews. I laughed so much over this book, my husband actually got irritated with all the noise I was making. The shenanigans from the girls in the first book were hilarious to read. Grace's primness versus the Reeves in book two had me bursting in giggles almost every page. And while book three was a little more serious, I had to just laugh at Hannah and her overactive imagination. A very enjoyable read, and one I will revisit again and again.

    4.5 Stars!

Sophie Edwards has been hiding and living on her own for two years in the thicket. One night a man rides by her home and over a cliff. Seconds before a flash flood threatens to kill her and the mystery rider she and her girls pull the man to safety. As they work to doctor the man up Sophia soon realizes he looks just like her husband. Problem is she buried him herself two years ago!! Clay wakes up and thinks he is surrounded by angels. Soon he finds out that Sophia is his late brothers wife. He plans to look after the family and has Sophia married to him before she can beat him senseless for such an idea! What follows is a hysterical love story filled with laughter, love and petticoats.

Last year I was lucky enough to read the series Sophie's Daughters which is the three young girls(Mandy, Beth and Sally) in this book all grown up. I have wanted to go back and read how it all began and finally a few months back the Kindle version of the whole trilogy was released.

What I liked: Sophie and her girls are great you can't help but fall in love with them. They are strong Texas ladies and letting a man into their life was quite fun to read. I also enjoyed meeting some of the side characters. Plus the story of Sophia praying to God for help which in turn had people coming from 100's of miles away to help her was really neat and a cool way to show how God is always their for us.

What I did not like: The one thing that kind of bothered me was the rule Clay made with the girls about no crying. I know its part of the story line and parts of that carries over to the series about them, I just thought it was kind of stupid. But watching Clay run every time a girl cried was funny!

Over all this was a great book and I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read the other two books in the series. I just love Mary's writing style and how she tells her stories. I really can not get enough of her and can see myself going back and rereading her books at some point which is not something I do a lot. If you like Historical Fiction and Western Romance this is a great book for you.
