Jobes' analysis is thorough and she interacts with a variety of commentators making this a scholarly work, yet this commentary achieves the dual aims of the series: academic sophistication and pastoral sensitivity and accesibility.

Series: Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament
1 Peter admirably achieves the dual aims of the BECNT series--it is academically sophisticated as well as pastorally sensitive and accessible. This volume features Jobes's own translation of the Greek text and detailed interaction with the meaning of the text, emphasizing the need to read 1 Peter in light of its cultural background.
Jobes's commentary will help pastors, students, and teachers better understand the Christian's role as a "foreigner" in contemporary society.

It is not for the beginner without additional research. However, it goes into detail about the political climate of the times and the implications to Peter and the early followers of Christianity. This is a book that will remain in my library after the Bible study is finished.
John Pepplinkhuizen Willemsen5 Stars Out Of 5December 27, 2007John Pepplinkhuizen WillemsenVery good commentary. Karen Jobes does not write a simple commentary but she thinks for herself and has some very good, very surprising insights. Very readable for all interested readers.
Peter Amue5 Stars Out Of 5June 4, 2006Peter AmueJobes has written a superb commentary on this epistle. In it she introduces her new theory regarding the historical background contrary to the traditional belief that Peter wrote to Christians of Asia Minor. She also interprets the letter against the context of passages quoted from the LXX. The exegesis is detailed, and reference to other works compliments the work. Jobes deals with the passage on 3:19-20a giving the reader an excellent study; but falls short of a detailed account. One needs to turn to Goppelt, who gives a brilliant study in his commentary. I recommend the commentary as a new approach to the study of 1 Peter.
