Perspectives on Spirit Baptism presents in counterpoint form the basic common beliefs on spirit baptism which have developed over the course of church history with a view toward determining which is most faithful to Scripture. Each chapter will be written by a prominent person from within each tradition—with specific guidelines dealing with the biblical, historical, and theological issues within each tradition. In addition, each writer will have the opportunity to give a brief response to the other traditions.
Chad Brand is associate professor of Christian Theology at Boyce College of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He resides in Louisville, Kentucky

CJ5 Stars Out Of 5PERSPECTIVES ON SPIRIT BAPTISM; FIVE VIEWSOctober 3, 2014CJQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book is a much more intensive theological analysis of 5 views on how the Holy Spirit
enters our life both at salvation (justification) and then post-salvation (sanctification) when
compared to the 1987 Zondervan publication on FIVE VIEWS ON SANCTIFICATION. Each
author presents his own view and then the 4 others critique that view.
The 5 views in this book are:
1. The Reformed View
2. The Pentecostal View
3. The Charismatic View
4. The Wesleyan View
5. The Roman Catholic View
Unfortunately, in the table of contents of this book does not list the 4 response/critiques
of each view but be assured, they are present at the end of each major essay in this book.
This may have led to this book being undersold since many who read these type of books,
like me, would pass it over if there were no response/critiques to each of the 5 views
presented in this book. Again, although the Table of Contents does not list the
response/critiques, be assured, they are present in this book.
The longest essay in this book is the Charismatic View which believes strongly
in a post-salvation encounter with the Holy Spirit and yet does not demand
a specific sign to indicate that this has happened in the Christian's life.
The Reformed View is the shortest essay in this book teaching that one has
all assets at salvation.
Zondervan does have a comparable debate book in a 1995 publication:
ARE MIRACULOUS GIFTS FOR TODAY? which presents and debates 4 views.
However, this Zondervan 1995 publication focuses more on whether such
miraculous gifts are normative or just a part of past redemptive history.
This book by Broadman and Holman actually focuses in on the how the
Holy Spirit enters our life at salvation and also (if assumed) enter our life
post-salvation for empowerment, godly living, and power ministry.
This book has more reading material due to the higher frequency
of words per page compared to the other two Zondervan publications.
Not recommended for new Christians, this book will provide a Christian
who has had some serious theological training with an excellent survey
of how the Holy Spirit works in the life of a Christian.
