Publisher's Description

Would I Lie to You? Not This Year.

Veteran author and speaker Phil Callaway is no stranger to daunting challenges. He has been laughed at—repeatedly—by large crowds of people from Halifax to Hong Kong. He fathered three children in three years, spent much of last year on airplanes built by the lowest bidder, and flipped an out-of-control ATV, which doesn’t mean he sold it for a profit. So who better than Phil Callaway to boldly accept a challenge that would make the average person run and hide?

Phil promised to tell the truth for an entire year, and he wasn’t joking. Twelve months later, his journal was crammed with successes, near-successes, and outright failures. During his year-long experiment with veracity, he made a disastrous financial investment, fielded hundreds of intrusive questions from friends and strangers, attended a thirty-year class reunion, and waded into possibly the most revealing—and hilarious—situations he has ever documented.

Find out what happens when a follower of Jesus does his level best to always tell the truth. There is no doubt you’ll be entertained. But don’t be surprised if you are left with a question: how might your life be changed if you sold out to the truth—with no exceptions?

Endorsements

"This book is fabulous and funny. I couldn't read it all at once because my doctor doesn’t want me to tear my stitches! These journal entries can help alter the way we view our speech and relationships, God’s grace, and our own integrity. To be perfectly honest, I plan to plagiarize everything Phil has written here! - Bryan Duncan, Grammy Award–winning musician

"Reading Phil Callaway’s writing is one of life's pure pleasures. His books are not just a pleasure to savor, like eating a perfectly ripe pear. They are full of firm insights that give grace for the daily race, especially when the journey is hard." - Ellen Vaughn, New York Times best-selling coauthor of It's All About Him and author of Time Peace

"Phil Callaway may be known for his humor, but he takes on a serious topic in To Be Perfectly Honest: He tries not to lie for one solid year. Thankfully, he takes us along on his 365-day journey with his sense of humor firmly intact. You'll enjoy this book-no lie." - Mark Joseph, Foxnews.com, author of The Lion, the Professor, and the Movies: Narnia’s Journey to the Big Screen

"Phil is what you'd get if you tampered with the genes of Garrison Keillor, Dave Barry, and my fourth-grade Sunday school teacher. Don't buy a copy of this book. Buy a few dozen.” - Joel Freeman, author of God Is Not Fair, chaplain for the Washington Bullets

"I love Phil Callaway because he manages to accomplish what few writers can-masterfully blending laughter with learning." - Lee Strobel, best-selling author of The Case for Christ

"Very few authors make me laugh out loud. Phil Callaway makes me roar. Maybe that's why I savor his books like a cup of hot chocolate. Sipping each story slowly, rolling it around my mouth to get the full flavor. Then spitting it all over the room in reaction to the hilarious truth." - Ken Davis, author and comedian

"Reading Phil Callaway is like playing in holy sand. You're having so much fun you don't realize how much has gone into your shoes and is now sticking to your life." - Chris Fabry, author and host of Chris Fabry Live!

"God speaks through the small and ordinary in extraordinary ways. Phil has listened and heard—and thankfully decided to share it with us." - Michael Card, author, teacher, and singer/songwriter

"Phil Callaway is master of the funny bone and the heart tug. He pretends to be just a fellow traveler, but I’m not fooled: he knows the ground well, and I’d follow him anywhere." - Mark Buchanan, author of The Rest of God and Hidden in Plain Sight

"Phil keeps us laughing so it doesn’t hurt so much when we face the truth." - John Fischer, author of What on Earth Are We Doing?

"Phil Callaway really enjoys life—life with his family and life with his Lord. He's the kind of contented, happy Christian I like to be around." - Luis Palau, author and evangelist

"Very likely Phil Callaway has the best sense of humor in the Western hemisphere. Rollicking humor, subtle wit, charm, and style don't often coexist in one author's prose, but they surely do in the case of Phil Callaway." - Paul L. Maier, author of A Skeleton in God’s Closet and Pontius Pilate

I have to admit that I found this book quite refreshing and funny. Imagine challenging yourself to not tell a lie for an entire year. Talk about your hard things to do! We tell so many lies, and isn't that how comedians make their living? I was impressed with Phil Callaway and his writing style, not to mention the fact that he actually took the assignment seriously. I found myself sympathizing and seeing myself many times throughout the book. I found myself thinking about all the lies I tell without thinking about it. I think you will find this a delightful book, and it is a moment to just take a deep breath and truly think about your spiritual life. But don't worry. You'll do it with a smile on your face!

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

I'm a big fan of humor and have a broad taste, but "To Be Perfectly Honest" kind of drones on. The concept of the book is very good and potentially very funny. However it is written in a journal format and there is a lot of filler and mundane unnecessary facts.

I'm sure that this book will strike a cord with some people, but I suspect they will be mostly people that are very familiar with the author and his stand up. I enjoy his sense and type of humor - its just a shame that there wasn't more of the funny and less of the mundane.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review

As usual Phil grabs your attention immediately. He is funny and makes the point boldly of how important it is to be honest. His expose' of his own lack of honesty at times helps make the point.

He made it plain that we do not think at times when we speak and that we are not always up-front with our commitments.

I did feel that there were times that he was too flipant with some serious material. Over all it was a good read and I would recommend the book.

To Be Perfectly Honest: One Man's Year Of Living Truthfully Could Change Your Life. No Lie, written by Phil Callaway is a book that demonstrates to its readers just how difficult it is to purposefully, continually speak nothing but the truth.

What brings power into the book is the fact that Phil never claims to have been the one person who was capable of traveling through a year speaking nothing but the truth. He shares with his readers the truth of his successful moments and those moments that most of us try to sweep under the rug or remove by hitting the imaginary delete button.

As one reads through this book, laughter will emerge, tears will begin to well up, and some might even begin to wish they could have expressed their words in the same manner, as they have gone through a similar circumstance.

Some might not like the book simply because it is in journal format, but I don't think the book could have been expressed in a better manner. In expressing his challenge in a journal format, Phil is able to show us that telling the exact truth is a daily struggle we all must go through.

All in all, this book is a recommended read, as it brings truth and sincerity to the daily struggles we all experience as we try to be completely honest.
