Product Description

Just when mural artist Kate Meadows resolves to embrace singledom and be unbelievably, inconceivably happy, it seems to be raining men. Hallelujah! Or not. First, there's Michael. He's the famous makeup artist determined to bring Kate's looks up to his standard. It's amazing what a few cosmetic procedures can do, but Kate's starting to feel like she's on Extreme Makeover, just without the TV cameras and someone else paying the bill. Then there's the enigmatic Dr. Clive Alexander. Despite his insistence that Kate is perfect just the way she is, he wants to change her in his own way. So, what's a single, thirty-something woman to do? It's a tough call. For as much effort goes into improving her appearance, even more is needed to jumpstart her "on hold" relationship with God.

Author Bio

Tamara Leigh began writing romance novels to “get the stories out of her head.” Over the course of one providential year, she gave birth to her first child, committed her life to Christ, gave up a career in speech pathology, and released her first novel. Her first seven novels earned awards and became national bestsellers, but Tamara was dissatisfied that the stories were not God-honoring. In 2003, she determined to write books that more directly represented her faith. Tamara and her husband, David, live with their two young sons in Tennessee.

Perfecting Kate by Tamara Leigh follows the before and after transformation of Katherine Mae Meadows, successful artist and not-so-successful fashion queen. Shaken by Premature Ovarian Failure, which costs her a fiancé unwilling to wed without the promise of biological children, Kate has slackened in her efforts to appear feminine. When she bumps into and begins dating famous makeup artist Michael Palmer, Kate struggles to balance efforts at physical self-improvement with her growing relationship with God. Add Dr. Clive Alexander, separated from God by grief but to whom Kate is deeply attracted, and her world takes a colorful turn!

Written in first person, Perfecting Kate pulls the reader into its heroine’s heart and world. Kate’s internal conversations and journal entries offer a glimpse into a three-dimensional woman facing real issues. Kate’s struggles with weight, heartache, and a tenuous self-image are issues identifiable with most women. Yet, Kate’s buoyant sense of humor keeps the novel moving at a quick, enjoyable pace.

Vying for Kate’s heart, Michael and Clive also come across to the readers as real men. Clive’s grief is deeply felt without his separation from God being over-dramatized. Michael’s constant offering of business cards to Kate—ranging from hair stylists to mole removal experts—reveals him as well-meaning, if insensitive. The relationships between characters are ones the reader will find equally charming.

The novel’s Christian message is delivered with unusual skill. Without seeming heavy-handed, Leigh allows readers to glean useful truths for themselves. Themes such as prioritizing God, speaking with honesty, focusing on internal beauty, and guarding one’s tongue, are among many with which the reader can empathize. Though a few descriptive phrases are overused, and the occasional expression may seem clichéd, Leigh’s writing is clever, stylistic, and beautiful. The novel’s narrative drive is lively and enjoyable, drawing smiles and tears alike. By the story’s end, the reader is left satisfied and wishing to continue the acquaintance.

Perfecting Kate imparts beautiful and genuine insights into the heart of the modern Christian woman. Though most women have not directly experienced Kate’s story, the reflection of a woman struggling to follow Christ and find life and love is one many have known. Tamara Leigh’s latest novel is an excellent choice for any woman seeking hope and a happy ending. – Lauren M. Peltier, Christian Book

Kate Meadows is pretty sure she has her life in order. She believes in embracing singledom and being unbelievable and inconceivably happy. As a successful San Francisco artist, she doesn't need a man in the picture. But then, not just one, but two men enter her life unexpectedly. Michael Palmier is a makeup artist who actually seems to be flirting with her, not her perfect roommate, Maia. The only thing she can't take about him is that he keeps handing her business cards to people who zap away physical imperfections - for a price.

Then there is Dr. Clive Alexander. Once a cosmetic surgeon for the rich and famous, he has changed specialties and now works for a hospital as a reconstructive burn specialist and surgeon. Too bad her hearts skips a beat every time she sees him, as he sees to be only interested in her work. As she fights herself and God on some big decisions in her life, how far will she go to perfect herself? And is lying by silence really lying or just shielding others from the awful truth?

Kate has got to be, hands down, the funniest girl in chick lit. Maybe I just haven't read enough of the genre, but Leigh brings Kate to life that is in a word - perfect. She's flawed, her relationship with God is teetering on disaster at times, and the predicaments she gets herself into are all too true to life. But more than all that, it brings us to the sobering question on where our walk with God actually is. Are we like Kate and "skip out" on our time with God because we have "so much" going on? Kate learned the hard way that God's ways are higher than our ways, and that being the case, the most we can do is listen, and obey.
