Gary Chapman and Rick Osborne help children learn about the importance of love in this wonderfully imaginative and classically illustrated children's hardcover book featuring four-color illustrations (with hidden details!) by Wilson Williams, Jr., and based on Gary's bestselling The 5 Love Languages. Each child in this entertaining and playful story learns that they have a primary love language that when "spoken" by others, makes them feel loved. As the five children in the story interact with Mr. Chapman and the unique animals at his special zoo/museum/theme park/birthday party palace, they come to understand their own love language! Readers, especially children ages 5-8, are sure to recognize their own love language as the story develops, and at the end of the book is a fun quiz that will help parents and children identify their own love language.
The cast of child characters in this whimsical story include:Penny, Peyton's twin sister, who receives love best when others spend quality time with her. Mr. Chapman introduces Penny to Horace, a Ragdoll Cat who just wants to be with Penny. Jayla, one of Penny's close friends, is always saying nice things about people. Her love language is words of affirmation. Jayla's perfect pet pal is Pamela, an African Grey Parrot, who repeats the nice things Jayla says about others. Kevin, one of Peyton's close friends, enjoys giving things to people. So does his special pet Chipo, a Capuchin Monkey! Sofia loves to pet the animals, and to show her love for others with special hugs. Physical touch is Sofia's love language. Snuggles
KaitMinneapolis, MNAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A Nice Introductory Teaching ToolJune 24, 2014KaitMinneapolis, MNAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4A Perfect Pet for Peyton written by Rick Osborne and Gary Chapman uses Mr. Chapman's Perfect Pet Pal Emporium to discover the Five Love Languages for Kids. These include Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Physical Touch, and Acts of Service. Twins Peyton and Penny are having a birthday party at the Emporium with their friends where they all can take home a pet pal that is their perfect love language match.
The Perfect Pet Pal Emporium is a dreamland for animal lovers. Young children are not only introduced to a wide variety of different animals, but they also learn how to appreciate nature and care for gentle creatures by reading this story. Including the specific names of the animals on the big picture pages as well as asking the reader to search for them made for fun breaks and games in between reading the story.
The authors discuss the Five Love Languages through these wonderful animals, which makes these concepts easier to connect with and understand for small children. My only negative would be that this picture book was a tad too long to hold the attention span of my three-year-old as she began to rush through the book towards the end just to see what new amazing animals awaited her on the next page.
In addition to the Five Love Languages, this picture book presented a few other significant messages for children. Waiting and being patient for something can be challenging (Going to the Pet Emporium), but well worth it. Perhaps not everything goes as you planned (Peyton wanting an enormous pet that couldn't be taken home), but there is always something out there just as delightful and perfect waiting for you. Peyton and Penny's friends also showed that simple gifts from the heart are the sweetest kind to give. Finally, Peyton and Penny were grateful for everything they had and experienced. Overall, the authors did a nice job of incorporating positive messages in a picture book that young children can identify with and enjoy.
I received a copy of this book from Moody Publishers for the purpose of this review, Thanks!
KateAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A great introduction for kids.May 15, 2014KateAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I was introduced to the 5 Love Languages for Kids by Gary Chapman a few years ago (ok, more than a few) when I was studying child development. From there I went on and read the adult version, and I have to say, it was interesting and very spot-on. It is helpful in knowing how to connect with people and understand what type of affirmations worked and didn't and understanding who had what traits.
I will say, I hadn't thought about introducing the Love Languages to children, nor did I know how to go about it. Because in all honesty, if I spoke with my little one, she would say gifts! She would feel so much love with as much stuff as you could buy her. It's the lovely age of give me, but I know, those gifts only offer her a short time of joy.
This book presented in such a fun and understanding way that helps kids understand, that not everyone is a hugger, or some people love to give to others to show their love, while others love to build others up with positive words. This story presented all of these fun observations as the story unfolded surrounded with the fun idea that the children in the book would be paired with their perfect pet at the end that matched their love language.
The Perfect Pet for Peyton was also a fun interactive book. So, while the parent could read to the child, the child could search out the different prompts from the book, I failed miserably at one, finding all the bugs, but it was a fun scavenger hunt for the kiddo. There were animals galore which is a plus in the kiddo's point of view, she wanted all the ones listed.
A Perfect Pet for Peyton was an easy to understand story that was fun to read along with.
Thank you to MP Newsroom, I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
PhoenixAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Interesting, Lacks ClaritySeptember 3, 2013PhoenixAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I think my expectations were that it would be at a younger child's level. I thought the story line was interesting enough but lacked clarity in trying to accomplish really understanding love languages and why they could be important in relationships. My 7 year old grandson enjoyed it, but it wasn't a real favorite for him.
crtnybcBritish Columbia, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A fantastic book for kids, great tool for parentsJune 2, 2013crtnybcBritish Columbia, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a wonderful story with beautiful illustrations and it also gets it's message across clearly. My kids love this book, even the 9 year old listened intently and got into it. Every page has a bug to find which helps to keep little ones engaged.
In the story the kids go to a birthday party at a Pet Emporium that also doubles as a theme park. Pretty cool. They will each leave with a perfect pet pal that Mr. Chapman pairs them with. They are based on the 5 love languages and how each child likes to show, and be shown, love. There's a 5 love languages quiz at the end to discuss with your children and help you figure out what their individual love languages are. I found the book and quiz very helpful in determining what my children's love languages might be.
If you are interested in more information there is an online quiz to do for yourself or your child at www.5lovelanguages.com as well as information on each of the love languages.
Another bonus with the book is the free ios app! Sweet, gotta love that, right? My favourite game is the one where you go through your house with your device looking for pets that show up on screen.
This is a fantastic book and a great resource for learning more about your kids!
I received this book from Moody Publishers for the purpose of an honest review. My opinion is my own. Thank you Moody Publishers!
Jolene5 Stars Out Of 5Good story, loved the illustrations!November 13, 2012JoleneQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5For twins Peyton and Penny, this will be a birthday to remember. Joined by three of their friends, Peyton and Penny's adventure through Mr. Chapman's Perfect Pet Pal Emporium includes surprising animal encounters, eating Mythical Monster Sundaes, opening gifts, and finding their own perfect pet pals based on their personal love languages.
A Perfect Pet for Peyton by Gary Chapman and Rick Osborne, and illustrated by Wilson Williams, Jr. is based on Chapman's book, The Five Love Languages. As Peyton, Penny and their friends celebrate at Mr. Chapman's Perfect Pet Pal Emporium, they learn what the five love languages are and the characteristics of each love language. Though the concepts are explained in simple terms, children ages five to ten are probably target age group for this book. Still, the illustrations are beautiful and my five month old enjoyed looking at them. I thought it was neat how there were hidden insects on some of the pages. This adds a nice element that can allow for further child-parent or sibling interaction.
I absolutely would recommend A Perfect Pet for Peyton to parents. It teaches the principles of the five love languages and contains underlying messages about animal kindness, friendship, and love.
