"The Pawn" is a well-written, heart-pounding, fast-paced forensic/detective thriller. The novel had a somewhat bleak tone. The crimes and crime scenes were very chilling, though not particularly graphic (i.e. he gives you just enough to let your imagination fill in all the gory, horrifying details). Combined with the high tension level, I'd strongly suggest you think twice about reading this novel right before going to bed.The characters were interesting and complex, and I especially loved Bower's step-daughter. She's a very smart and brave, though emotionally hurting, young woman. (The author portrayed the main women in this novel as smart, competent, respected, and not trying to be men. As a woman, I liked that.)The world-building was excellent, with the details about forensics, the case, and the town bringing the novel alive in my imagination. I felt like this was really happening in North Carolina, which gave me shivers that most mystery/suspense/thrillers don't achieve with me.The main characters weren't Christian (at least, not that we're told). However, Patrick Bower was struggling with why God allows Christians (like his wife) to suffer. This was not the focus of the book, but Patrick does finally find some peace about it. (This doesn't mean he converts to Christianity.) I felt this aspect was handled realistically. There was no sex, a little bit of romance, and the bad language was of the "he cussed" style. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in forensics fiction and/or who likes to read chilling thrillers.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Pawn" and Steven's follow-up novel "The Rook". These books are not for everyone, but a healthy alternative to the general marketplace gritty criminal fiction. If you're looking for an obvious Christ-based message, then read a different book. But if you can see the treasure buried in the story, go on a treasure hunt like no other.WARNING to members of "THE BIG, HONKIN' CHICKENS CLUB": Graphic violence doth abound, but good triumphs over evil...just gets rather bloody doing so:-)And I'm concerned that we're not just reviewing a book, but judging an author's heart...where is that acceptable? How would you all feel if I were judging YOUR heart by how critical you are of my brother in Christ?Let's keep it on the books and let God judge the hearts, shall we?

I do agree this book is not for teens, especially since most teens are too easily attracted by the wrong kinds of values. Nor do I think that this is a book for an adult struggling with mental stability. I could see an unstable adult trying to copycat the crimes in this book.

But for those who are stable adults, this book is scary without causing nightmares; tense, without being terrifying. Stephen James is a "thinker's" author, with complicated twists and plots.

Why sell it on CBD? There are subtle hints here and there about God and the foundation faith in God establishes for the believer. I have only read this book and and 2/3 the way through Rook at this time, but I read another series and the farther he gets in the series, one character grows bolder and bolder in expressing his or her faith. I anticipate this is going to happen at some point in this series as well.

This one was a reread for me, and I have to say that it was just as good my second time through.

Steven James is one of the most talented storytellers Ive ever encountered within the pages of a book. In-depth characters, twisty plots, complex storytelling.. all of these are major qualities in Steven James writing. Its so so good. He knows how to truly captivate his readers and relate to them. Even as he writes about an FBI detective tracking serial killers.

The Pawn is the fast-paced story of Patrick Bowers as he sets out to catch a bad guy.. a really bad guy who thinks of the graphic murders hes so intricately linked together as a game. Between all the dead ends Patrick faces with the case and the brick walls he finds himself up against with his teenage stepdaughter, he begins to realize that maybe he doesnt quite have life figured out as well as hed once thought.

This book is like a bag of barbecue potato chips. Quite addictive. Much like you find yourself reaching for another chip again and again, this tale and its intensity keep you turning page after page.

    * Although the first published Patrick Bowers novel, I highly recommend reading the prequels prior to this so you get the big picture and the full effect of the mystery. I didnt have that luxury since I read this one way before the prequels existed, but this time around Im enjoying the opportunity to read them chronologically.

This is one of the most engaging books I have read. The author draws you in and doesn't let you go. Because I am from Wisconsin, Patrick Bower's adventures have particular relevance. It is also a joy to be able to read a suspenseful book without having to worry about foul language. I think Steven James can take his place with the best crime authors of all time!
