Author Steven James does a great job keeping the reader guessing at each step of the way. Whenever you think you have something figured out, another layer to the character and plot is revealed.
James is very persistent in his writing, and creates a realistic and intriguing plot thatll keep you flipping pages.
The book deals with mature themes and might be best for teenagers and older.
However, if you like thrillers and mysteries, this one is for you.

The author draws you in and doesn't let you go. Because I am from Wisconsin, Patrick Bower's adventures have particular relevance. It is also a joy to be able to read a suspenseful book without having to worry about foul language. I think Steven James can take his place with the best crime authors of all time!

Too much graphic-ness!!! It was almost tossed in the trash.

I did find it too graphic at times. I found myself wanting more of an emphasis on Biblical issues. I almost put it aside a few times and didn't plan to finish it, but I did finish.
Southern Lady2 Stars Out Of 5SurprisedSeptember 12, 2013Southern LadyQuality: 4Value: 2Meets Expectations: 2I love suspense, mystery, intrigue, espionage, etc. type books. At one time I read Patricia Cornwell, Patterson, and others such as that. However, it seems as the success grew the books also did: each grew more unlike what I would think as believers we wouldn't read. I think that suspense does not have to be gory or in so much detail about that which is not so unedifying. There are many other authors who can keep one on the edge of the seat without the explicit details. The first of the series was enough. What surprise to find this for purchase on a Christian site. I normally recycle books to libraries, Salvation Army, Metropolitan Ministries, friends, neighbors, etc. This one went in the trash. When passing along books I hope to share that which reflects the Lord for others who might not know Him would want to read more about His character. Again other authors have written high suspense without sounding like an unbelieving author. If only judging the book's quality in grammatical terms and that the good guys always win, that quality would be good. Otherwise if quality is based on Biblical standards, no.

Tell us a little about yourself. Ive written over twenty nonfiction books, but this is my first novel. Ive wanted to write novels for a long time and have toyed with ideas for years, so it was a blessing to be able to finally craft one.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to examine, within the framework of an intense psychological thriller, the question of what makes us (specifically, me) different from those who do the unthinkable. Serial killers are just as human as I am; theyre not some kind of monsters, and yet they act in monstrous ways. Am I capable of that as well? Thats the question that drove the narrative.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I dont write so much with an agenda in mind, that is, that Im hoping readers will learn a lesson, as much as I am hoping theyll examine and explore moral issues. But I would say that, in addition to being entertained, I hope readers will gain new insights into the fallen nature of man and of the need all of us have of a Savior.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? For this book I needed to do a lot of research on cults. When I saw the power of brainwashing, I was reminded once again of how powerful ideas are and how easily we can be deceived and led astray by them. Scripture warns against being deceived by the hollow philosophies of this age. Its easy for all of us, me included, to get deceived. Its not easy to admit that, but when we do we open ourselves up to grow more in the knowledge of the truth.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I remember reading Sigmund Brouwers novel Blood Ties and being struck by how groundbreaking it was in the Christian book market. It gave me confidence that my books would find an audience here as well.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Since The Pawn contains some graphic and violent scenes, some people have asked me if this book is a Christian novel. I would say that it is not by any means unchristian. If you like gripping psychological suspense without sex and foul language and written from a Christian worldview, youll enjoy this book.
