There is scripture to read, followed by his thoughts and concludes with the reader to ponder a question at the conclusion, that focuses on the previous scripture and devotional that causes us to examine and search our heart to determine if we need to make changes in our pilgrim walk.
bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5great Bible based daily devotionalJanuary 7, 2011bookwomanjoanOak Harbor, WAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Warren Wiersbe is a Bible scholar and author of popular commentaries called the "Be" series (Be Confident, Be Mature, etc.) I have used his books as resources in my Bible teaching and appreciate his ability to reveal biblical truths in an understandable way for lay-men and women.
Pause for Power is a collection of insights from Wiersbe from a number of his commentaries (Old Testament books Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Isaiah, New Testament books Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter and 1 John). A short biblical passage is recorded and most often an longer passage is listed. Then an insight from Wiersbe's writings is given. The daily reading ends with a thought provoking question, something to ponder during the day.
While I have not read the entire book yet (I am reading it as my devotional this year) I do like what I have seen so far. Wiersbe's insights are very practical and address daily life and the development of a Christlike character.
The only aspect of the book with which I am unhappy is that instead of being dated, each page is headed as "Day 1," "Day 2," etc. I would have preferred the date heading the page so I know if I am behind. With this way of listing the readings, however, one can use the devotional and not be tied to reading by date.
This book was provided for review by The B&B Media Group Inc. for David C. Cook, the publisher.
Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Insightful and interestingDecember 1, 2010Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Pause for Power" is a 365-day devotional based off of Warren Wiersbe's "Be" commentary series. Each day's devotional had a Scripture reading that was a few verses to couple chapters long that you looked up and read on your own. It then quoted a few verses from that passage. Next came the insightful commentary which was usually about the quoted verses. However, this commentary fairly frequently referred to parts of the passage not quoted, so you'll get the most out of this devotional if you actually read the whole passage. And, if you do, you'll have completely read Job, Ecclesiastes, Isaiah, Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, and 1 John by the end of the devotional book.
The commentary read like it was directly out of his "Be" commentaries on these books. It often included fuller explanations of the original words that didn't translate well into English and background information that helped show how the original listeners would have understood the passage. At the end of each page-long devotional, there was a question or two for the reader to reflect on as to how to practically apply what was just learned.
The writing was easy to understand and interesting. Overall, this devotional had more meat on it than most I've seen, and I'd highly recommend it to those who enjoy using devotionals.
I received this book as a review copy through The B&B Media Group.
jb05Rochester, NYAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5It's a MUST have...November 30, 2010jb05Rochester, NYAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Warren Wiersbe to me was WAY over my head. So I often stayed away from his books and teachings. At the prompting of my husband I reviewed one of his "Be" series books on Judges. I LOVED it. When this book came up for review I was thrilled!!
Pause for Power is a 365 day journey through Scripture. The devotionals are short but full of detail. I found myself reading each days devotional and then going on a detailed journey in the Bible. At the bottom of the entry is "something to ponder". It gives you a thought provoking question.
I'm looking forward to starting this book from the beginning starting with January 1. Just because you don't have a theology degree, don't think you can't and won't understand Warren Wiersbe's books. I have learned so much from his writings that I look forward to more. If you are looking for a wonderful Christmas present this is perfect!! The gift that keeps on giving all year long.
Christy Lockstein5 Stars Out Of 5Short readings in this daily devotionalNovember 30, 2010Christy LocksteinQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Pause for Power by Warren W. Wiersbe is a 365 day devotional perfect for bringing God's peace and power into your life. Wiersbe is well-known for his thoughtful studies of each book of the Bible, but in this book he offers up short but powerful lessons for each day. Each reading is short enough to be read in just a few minutes, so there is no excuse for not making the time to pick it up every day. If I forget in the morning, I just pick it up in the evening, as long as I take the time to open it up. Wiersbe's writing is always insightful and thought-provoking, making each day's reading something to look forward to. I haven't made it through the entire year with the book yet, but I love the concise readings with a Bible verse about the day's principle. It's a great way to start the day (or finish it), and Wiersbe's writing will bring readers closer to the Lord.
