Not your typical commentary! Wright uses his own bible translation which seems to dumb down the text for the modern reader to the point that much of the depth and richness of Romans is sacrificed for perspicuity's sake. It might be best to use ESV, NASB, etc., and then read Wright's comments. The real life stories at the beginning of each section are often helpful in illustrating the major point(s) covered in the verses being addressed. Some of his perspectives are slightly outside the pale of orthodoxy, which may provoke the more advanced students (and scholars) to think more deeply about some of the concepts Paul addresses in this epistle. Overall, this is a good basic guide for someone studying Romans for the first time. However, be aware that there are many more treasures buried just under the surface of Romans that this particular commentary does not uncover. Read it, for sure. But keep in mind that there are other more in-depth, more technical, and more comprehensive commentaries available.

Excellent passage by passage expansion of densely packed Romans. Very easily understood by this layperson. It helped describe the overall sweep of the letter as well as individual sections.
