Product Description

Regarded as a unique window on early church practices, the Pastoral Epistles are the subject of intense debate concerning their authorship. Drawing on Acts, extrabiblical traditions, and the disputed letters themselves, Mounce marshals impressive evidence to support the placement of these documents within the Pauline corpus. A spirited defense demonstrating the relevancy of the letters for today's church.

This book on Pastoral Epistle is a good study for those who are interested in Eldership training for the biblical model of the New Testament church, it clarifies the Greek text and is a bit on the technical but necessary aspect of the doctrine of church

    polity.

I have other books by William Mounce which are also very excellent.

There is no question about it, this is the best commentary on the Pastoral Epistles. I don't normally appreciate the format of the series but for this one, I will make an exception. In fact, I found it to be particularly helpful.

Each section begins with a discussion of the form/structure/setting and ends with an explanation where he ties the whole discussion of the passage together so that you don't miss the forest for the trees. Though the series is meant to be a highly technical series, this commentary is surprisingly so readable. Mounce has a knack for simplifying complex issues. He does this as well in his Basics of Biblical Greek. I haven't read such a good commentary since Leon Morris on the gospel of John (NICNT).

I also have Towners Commentary on the Pastorals in the NICNT series but it not as clearly written as this one. If you had money to buy only one commentary, by all means get this one. For sermon preparation, this is a must!

    God bless

All I have to say about this commentary is "BUY IT!" This is BY FAR the best available commentary on the Pastoral Epistles. If you only have one commentary on the Pastorals, make it this one. I would encourage you to read Buddy Boone's reviews of this commentary and Marshall's.

Here is the work of a lifetime of research by Dr. William Mounce. The detail Mounce provides on the Pastorals is immense. In the massive introduction, Mounce makes the most convincing argument to date for Pauline authorship. The exegesis is lucid and convincing. The textual information is exhaustive and extremely helpful. His closing explanations of each section are carefully structured for maximum comprehension of the context. Thankfully, Dr. Mounce has translated the lion's share of Greek, which makes it accessible to those who have little knowledge of Greek. Use it with his NIV English-Greek New Testament and you will study these epistles in a way you only dreamed of before! Greek students will treasure this work! A well rounded commentary library should include this work along with the NIGTC work by George Knight, the ICC work by I. Howard Marshall, and the NIBC work by Gordon Fee.
