Product Description

Designed for you to discover the meaning of Jesus' life in the midst of your day-to-day circumstances, The Passionate Journey gives you daily Scripture readings for the Lenten season accompanied by short reflections, bidding prayers, and space for journaling. The fourfold structure of Scripture, reflection, prayer, and journaling will move you from hearing the Word of God to responding to it in prayer and action.

There are 41 devotions - 40 for the days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday (excluding Sundays) and one for Easter. For the six Sundays that are not a part of the Lenten observation, you are provided with a Scripture, reflection, and prayer, but in observance of the Sabbath day of rest, there is no journaling space. Hardcover.

Publisher's Description

Society tells us we have the power and where-with-all to make it on our own. The Passionate Journey runs counter to these voices of self-sufficiency with a thoughtful collection of 47 Lenten devotions leading up to the most sacred time of the year—Easter. Through guided reflection, Scripture reading, journaling, silence and prayer, we are drawn into the peace that is generated by solitude, and prompted to reorganize our priorities, to slow down and appreciate the ultimate sacrifice made by Christ on our behalf. These well-crafted devotional readings are divided into four, 10-day sections with a special portion for Easter holy week, especially designed to help readers attend to Jesus’ sacrifice, and apply the message of the Passion to their life. Additional helps are included in the appendix to help adapt the readings for small-group or family devotions. Even Christians whose faith traditions don’t ordinarily include Lenten devotions will find these reflections a welcome retreat and will help connect their lives to Jesus’ sacrificial story.

I thought this devotional was very sensitive to my spiritual needs, the journaling appealed to me the most. I was disappointed I didn't get more to share with my husband and ministry members.

This book is a good way to get ready for Easter. I enjoyed both the Scripture readings and the daily thoughts. I did not enjoy that the prayer for each day was the same. The journaling pages after each day were a good way to reflect on what you had read.

I enjoyed going through this book as a part of a small group study with the author. I learned things that I wasn't aware of about Jesus and those final days of His life. I also learned much about myself. Marty has interjected events from his own life that, in some cases, added humor to make a point. In other instances, I found myself nearly crying as he has described incidents that parallel some of my own experiences. The way he has written the book makes the reader take an active part in it thereby insuring that it will be remembered beyond the Lenten season.

I was priviledged to participatein a small study group using Walking into the Darkness Toward the Light of Easter. The lessons caused me to examine my inner selfand find a stronger peace of mindand faith. A comradeship was foundwithin the group which resulted insharing each other's doubts andweaknesses. I'm glad I attendedthe Lenten study.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Marty A. Bullis
Submitted: October 20, 2006

Tell us a little about yourself.  I’m a professional philosopher who writes about the philosophy of time, culture and the spiritual life. I am a graduate of Milligan College (B.A. in Biblical Studies) and Claremont Graduate University (M.A. & Ph.D. in Philosophy). I’ve taught philosophy and religion courses at Azusa Pacific University, The College of New Jersey, and James Madison University. Currently I live in central Pennsylvania with my wife and children, where I enjoy hiking, welding, stargazing and teaching at Juniata College.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Western society is dominated by voices that are opposed to Lent. Lent is a contemplative death- march that Christians perform each year in order to stay attentive to the sacrificial work of God. We pick up our crosses, letting our selves die a bit each day that Christ might live more fully within us. Society offers us little help in living this type of sacrificial life. Rarely do we hear about death except in tragic terms. Advertisers, politicians, and entertainers train us to be self-interested consumers not disciples. This book is a personal attempt to return to the basics of our salvation. It’s a Christian version of "raging against the culture’s machine" in order to live more like Jesus. I hope it will help others live out Jesus’ counter-cultural, revolutionary calling.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Lent is a 40 day gift of time during which Christians consider Jesus’ gift—-his sacrificial death on our behalf. It’s a time of remembrance and contemplation, when we walk toward death with Christ. We relive Jesus’ Passion by rereading the Gospel accounts. We anticipate our own deaths and pray that our journeys will be faithful, reflecting Jesus’ obedient journey to the cross. The Passionate Journey is designed to help the reader embrace this gift of time and renew Christ’s call to sacrificial living.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Here’s a list of people whose work I value: Eugene Peterson, Robert Inchausti, the Desert Fathers & Mothers, Albert Borgmann, Billy Collins, Paul Cezanne, T. S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath, Robert Bly, Ted Kooser, Czeslaw Milosz, James Merrill, John McGahern, Robert Fisk, Noam Chomsky.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  If you enjoy "The Passionate Journey" you may enjoy my Advent book, which looks at the four Gospel accounts of Jesus’ birth. The book will be out fall 2007.
