I received a complementary copy of "Great Parents, Lousy Lovers," by Dr. Gary Smalley and Ted Cunningham through the Tyndale Media Center's blog network, and it could not have come at a better time! As the mother of an almost three-year-old, fifteen-month-old, and one on the way I could feel my relationship with my husband becoming strained under the weight of parenthood and trying to maintain our household. This book links humor, real life antidotes, and a little bit of advice in a thought provoking manner that is sure to get you and your spouse talking, while pushing Christ to the center of your relationship. This is certainly a book that is easier to read than most parenting books, and goes by quickly. It is designed to help couples find a way to refocus on their relationship instead of their children to help their children (and themselves!) in the long run.

Smalley and Ted Cunningham take turns authoring each chapter adding humors antidotes and very applicable examples. They both use their own life experiences as a lesson to the reader. At the end of each chapters, there are a number of thought provoking questions about the topic.I personally really enjoyed this book. Not only was it an enjoyable read (very easy read as well), but it was humorous, and very applicable to me. The Authors bring real life situations to the page in a very candid and practical way. I love how they integrated scripture throughout the book. Using the wisdom of Solomon as a guide for marriage. It never ceases to amaze me how the Bible has the answers to everything in our lives. Even with keeping the spark alive in our marriage, managing our homes, and trying to be great parents.I recommend this book a thousand percent. Be prepared to be challenged, be convicted, and most of all be ready to make a change!

I received this book complimentary from Tyndale and I'm under no obligation to give a good review. This time I'm disclosing that because of my husband. In fact, in the book Cunningham mentions that his wife felt the book should have been titled "Great Parents, Great Lovers." After the intense discussion with my own spouse, I'm thinking that Mrs. Cunningham was right. This book was a huge conversation starter. We had interesting talks about what makes a great parent and a great lover. As far as the book itself is concerned, overall it is fairly generalized. Not every scenario can reach the depths of every single relationship. Dr. Smalley is a renowned expert on relationships but his voice in this book is fairly limited. At times Dr. Smalley does dole out advice, but on the whole his voice is limited to a sort of "Yeah, what he said" sort of responses. At times I wanted more information and helpful hints. It is primarily a book written by Cunningham. As a pastor he has clearly been in countless marriage counseling sessions. As an author and relationship expert? To be honest, at times I felt his writing was trite and the jokes were flippant. For example, on Page 205 is this little ditty by Cunningham: "My wife is the type of woman who knows when the thermostat is set on seventy or seventy-one degrees at home. One degree makes a difference for her. And all the women said, "Amen!"" What in the heck does that last part mean? Perhaps a good editor should have taken a bit more of the personality out of Cunningham's writing? I do give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Is it the best book ever written about relationships and parenting? Not a chance. However is it a quick read that is sure to provoke discussions with your spouse? Most likely yes. Most importantly, Smalley and Cunningham truly bring Christ into every teaching point. If there is one thing couples need more of these days, it is more Christ in their marriage.

Okay...the title of this book originally made me think, I don't need to read THIS! and then I read the description- discovering how to put your spouse before your kids, re-investing in your marriage-not just your children, tipping the balance back to your spouse and not so weighted to your children...okay maybe I could use this book!I absolutely LOVED this book...I found it funny, and practical. I would recommend this book to any and every married couple, before during and even after the kids have left home. The authors Dr. Gary Smalley and Ted Cunningham have been honest and transparent in the details of their lives, and this brings authenticity to their recommendations. The authors give practical examples for couples, and churches on ways that they can continue to put marriages first. I would give this book five stars. This book was provided to me by Tyndale Publishers for purpose of review, I am under no obligation to provide a positive review.
