5 Stars Out Of 5
touching, enlightening, encouraging
June 22, 2012
I have not finished this book yet as it is set up as a daily devotional and I have a few more days to cover.
The book is divided into five sections: Learning to Care; Practical Caring; Caring between the Generations; Caring and Feeling; Caring until the End.
Each story is from two to four pages long, and written about someone's personal experiences - be it the author's or that of someone he knows. At the end of each is a Scripture reference and a brief prayer.
These stories are touching, enlightening, encouraging. Being a caregiver of a family member with Alzheimer's, I very much appreciate this book and have given copies to seven other people who are also caregivers.
I found this book to be a great encouragement. It did not shy away from presenting the difficulties encountered by caregivers, either physical, mental, or spiritual; nor did it offer "pie-in-the-sky" solutions. Instead, it was a very empathetic look at the variety of scenarios encountered by caregivers. While it acknowledges the extremes one might encounter, it encourages the caregiver to never lose sight of the source of the strength, compassion, tolerance, and love necessary to fulfill the call to care for your sick or aging as well as yourself and other family. Each devotional helped me to either rethink, refocus, or repurpose and provided the realization that there are many other individuals facing similar challenges, and that they too often feel angry, neglected, frightened, abandoned, overwhelmed, and unequipped. But each devotional also provided the needed Biblical encouragement and an empathetic prayer. I have given this as a gift and will share it with others facing this challenge.
