A stark and allegorical tale of adultery, guilt, and social repression in Puritan New England, The Scarlet Letter is a foundational work of American literature. Nathaniel Hawthorne's exploration of the dichotomy between public and private self, internal passion and external convention, gives us the unforgettable Hester Prynne, who discovers strength in the face of ostracism and emerges as a heroine ahead of her time.

The author has been long of opinion that many of the classical myths were capable of being rendered into very capital reading for children. In the little volume here offered to the public, he has worked up half a dozen with this end in view. A great freedom of treatment was necessary to his plan; but it will be observed by every one who attempts to render these legends malleable in his intellectual furnace that they are marvellously independent of all temporary modes and circumstances. They remain essentially the same, after changes that would affect the identity of almost anything else. He does not, therefore, plead guilty to a sacrilege, in having sometimes shaped anew, the forms that have been hallowed by an antiquity of two or three thousand years. No epoch of time can claim a copyright in these immortal fables. They seem never to have been made; and certainly, so long as man exists, they can never perish; but, by their indestructibillity itself, they are legitimate subjects for every age to clothe with its own garniture of manners and sentiment, and to imbue with its own morality. In the present version they have lost much of their classical aspect (or, at all events, the author has not been careful to preserve it), and have, perhaps, assumed a Gothic or romantic guise.--From the Preface

Amidst the inspiring landscape of Rome, three young Americans abroad discover the artistic and moral freedom offered by that historic city. Together with the childlike Donatello they flourish in the company of cultured Europeans. They are free to live, and free to love. While Kenyon quietly pursues the virginal Hilda, Donatello declares passionate, obsessive love for Miriam. But she is an unknown quantity, haunted by her former life; pursued by a sinister spectre and a sense of doom. Propelled by his wild and unsophisticated heart. Donatello provokes their mutual sin. Now, miserably entangled, their friendship-and love-must struggle to survive.

In language that is suggestive and often erotic, Nathaniel Hawthorne tells a tale of failed possibilities and multiple persnoal betrayals as he explores the contrasts between what his characters espouse and what they actually experience in an "ideal" community. A theme of unrealized sexual possibilities serves as a counterpoint to the other failures at Blithedale: class and sex distinctions are not eradicated, and communal work on the farm proves personally unrewarding and economically disastrous.

With a determined commitment to the history of his native land, Nathaniel Hawthorne revealed, more incisively than any other writers of his generation, the nature of a distinctly American consciousness. The pieces collected here deal with essential American matters: the Puritan past, the Indians, the Revolution. But Hawthorne was highly--often wickedly--unorthodox in his account of life in early America, and his precisely constructed plots quickly engage the reader's imagination. Written in the 1820s, 30s and 40s, these works are informed by themes that reappear in Hawthorne's longer works: The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, and The Blithedale Romance. And, as Michael J. Colacurio points out in his excellent introduction, they are themes that are now deeply embedded in the American literary tradition.

Here in one volume are all five of Nathaniel Hawthorne's world famous novels. Written in a richly suggestive style that seems remarkably contemporary, they are permeated by America's and Hawthorne's own history. The House of the Seven Gables moves across 150 years from an ancestral crime condoned by the Puritan theocracy to a new beginning in the bustling and democratic Jacksonian era. Hawthorne's masterpiece, The Scarlet Letter, is a dramatic allegory of the social consequences of adultery and the subversive force of personal desire in a community of laws. The Blithedale Romance explores the perils, which Hawthone knew firsthand, of living in a utopian community, and the inextricability of political, personal, and sexual desires. Fanshawe is an engrossing apprentice work which Hawthorne published anonymously and later sought to suppress. The Marble Faun, his last finished novel, involves mystery, murder, and romance among American artists in Rome.
