Writing Strands has helped thousands of homeschooled children to effectively write and communicate in the "real world" as well as their academic lives. Writing Strands 1 is designed for very young children who can't write at all, and is comprised of a series of flexible exercises. Arranged from easiest to hardest, the exercises can be used at whatever level your child is at, for however long you feel that it's necessary--or as long as you both want to! From making up words to finishing sentences and stories, rhyming, discussing stories, visualization and other simple games and activities, your children will be encouraged in a love of language and reading.
This group of assignments in the series called "Writing Strands" is designed to give homeschooled second level students a grounding in the very complicated process of giving others their thoughts in written form. Much of the planning and detail of the writing process is presented here. These assignments are written for you to teach from. This is the only level in which the expectation is that the child cannot work alone. Most seven year olds are too inexperienced to work independently. But, rather than increase your work, this writing process should make it easier for both you and your child to meet the demands for student writing skill. Although "Writing Strands" was not written for grade-level working, this Level Two book has been designed for students who are at what is known as the second grade level. When a child independently can write the sentence, "The dog is big." that child is ready for this level. Evaluating Writing is the teacher's guide to evaluating Writing Strands assignments. This manual addresses some concerns and conditions that cause children to fear and disdain writing, including: fear and insecurity, motivation, concentration, thinking through ideas, talking about mechanical problems, following directions, not wanting to edit, proofreading and what to do with a child that "just doesn't want to write". It also diagnosis common writing problems, offering solutions to each and includes copious examples of how the rough draft editing process should look. Softcover, 96 pages, indexed.
Writing Strands Writing Exposition presents a number of challenging exercises designed for the college-bound writer. Essays provide advice on everything from cover art to bias, the use of "I", cultural stability and exclamation points.
