Logic of English: Essentials

Logic of English: Essentials has been designed so that it can be effectively taught with a Teacher’s Manual, Student Workbook for each student (the program recommends cursive rather than manuscript), and one set of Basic Phonogram Flashcards. The Spelling Rule Flashcards, Grammar Flashcards, Advanced Phonogram Flashcards, Spelling Journal, Game Cards (blue, green, red), and The Phonogram and Spelling Game Book are all optional add-ons to enhance teaching.

Though the lessons are designed for students ages eight-to-adult who struggle with reading and/or spelling, the content and teaching methods are identical to those used for younger, emerging readers ages four to six. The primary differences are: 1) pacing, and 2) the extent of grammar that is taught. Lessons are rich in material and designed to be covered in two to four hours over the course of one to two days; younger students will need to slow the pace down and cover one lesson every one to two weeks.

Students should have developed phonemic awareness, know A-Z phonemes, and know how to write A-Z phonograms before beginning this course.

    Logic of English Foundations Series

The Logic of English Foundations Series is a complete, Orton-Gillingham based, language arts program that covers phonics, reading, handwriting, and spelling for students aged 4-7 (PreK-Grade 1).

Foundations is divided into levels to allow parents to pick and choose what schedule works best for their child. Logic of English states that a typical schedule is A & B in kindergarten and C & D in 1st grade; however, Level A can be started in Pre-K or Levels A-C can be completed in one year. Each lesson is designed to take approximately 30 minutes and covers at least two of the primary subjects; a review and assessment lesson follows after every five lessons. Level D is not available yet. Handwriting is taught with Logic of English’s unique Rhythm of Handwriting program. While this course is available separately, all instruction was integrated into the Foundations teacher’s materials and no additional purchase is necessary.

Each level requires the teacher’s manual and either a cursive or manuscript student workbook.

In addition, the following resources are used throughout the program:
    Doodling Dragons (Level A Only)
    Student Whiteboard
    Basic Phonogram Flash Cards
    Phonogram Game Cards
Rhythm of Handwriting Tactile Cards (in cursive or manuscript)
Rhythm of Handwriting Quick Reference Chart (cursive or manuscript)

        Rhythm of Handwriting

The innovative Rhythm of Handwriting curriculum from Logic of English is designed to accompany the Essentials curriculum, or serve as stand-alone writing course (it’s already built-in to the LoE Foundations series). Offering a multi-sensory approach that helps students develop fluid, natural, legible handwriting, this curriculum focuses on the kinesthetic movement of each stroke and the use of rhythmic verbal cues that guide students through the formation of each letter.

This program uses a custom font that was designed to be developmentally appropriate for young students and students struggling with handwriting. It is suitable for students of all ages who desire to master or improve their handwriting.

The Student Book is all that is needed to teach the course; the supplemental tactile cards and charts (all available in either cursive or manuscript) are not required. Both the cards and charts feature such detailed information that handwriting could be taught using only one or the other of those resources.
