Product Description

Have you ever wondered why we Christians do what we do for church every Sunday morning? Why do we "dress up" for church? Why does the pastor preach a sermon each week? Why do we have pews, steeples, choirs, and seminaries? This volume reveals the startling truth: most of what Christians do in present-day churches is not rooted in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles. Co-authors Frank Viola and George Barna support their thesis with compelling historical evidence in the first-ever book to document the full story of modern Christian church practices. 9.5 Hrs, Unabridged

Publisher's Description

Have you ever wondered why we Christians do what we do for church every Sunday morning? Why do we "dress up" for church? Why does the pastor preach a sermon each week? Why do we have pews, steeples, choirs, and SEMInaries? This volume reveals the startling truth: most of what Christians do in present-day churches is not rooted in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles. Co-authors Frank Viola and George Barna support their thesis with compelling historical evidence in the first-ever book to document the full story of modern Christian church practices. Many Christians take for granted that their churches practices are rooted in Scripture. Yet those practices look very different from those of the first-century church. The New Testament is not silent on how the early church freely expressed the reality of Christ’s indwelling in ways that rocked the first-century world. Times have changed. Pagan Christianity leads us on a fascinating tour through church history, revealing this startling and unsettling truth: Many cherished church traditions embraced today originated not out of the New Testament, but out of pagan practices. One of the most troubling outcomes has been the effect on average believers: turning them from living expressions of Christs glory and power to passive observers. If you want to see that trend reversed, turn to Pagan Christianity...a book that examines and challenges every aspect of our contemporary church experience.

I'm a student of church history and this book is right on the mark. The reviewers who gave it poor reviews have done so for the following reasons: 1. they do not know their history and want to defend practices that are clearly non christian in origin. 2. they are stuck in tradition and have put that above the testimony of scripture 3. they are conventiently overlooking the fact that this book is not a complete work but only the first part of a discussion that "Reimagining Church" and "Finding Organic Church" complete. The book is well written, historically accurate, but challenging because it exposes sacred cows that have no basis in the teaching of Jesus or the new testament literature. if you are an open minded christian who wants to follow God's Word, read the book. if you are close minded and are unteachable, keep your traditions and don't bother being challenged.

Made me realized how much more we need to rely on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God through daily living and end times.

Clearly an attack on organized Church. Mr. Viola reflects his lack of study in the areas of church history and basic exegesis. He ignores the facts and takes things out of context. I was disappointed because I really believe the church needs major change but this was not the way.

This is a great book. Very well written and documented. I disagree with the last reviewer. The book deals with where the modern pastor office came from and discusses elders in the process. It's good treatment of it. The sequel, Reimagining Church, goes into much more detail on what church should and can look like today. The chapters on church leadership are outstanding. I highly recommend both books.

After reading this book I found it interesting but lacked integrity in the aspect of dealing with biblical elders in the local church and their called out duties to Oversee, Shepherd, and work hard at preaching and teaching as taught in God's word. It seem to me that brother Frank and George have authority issues, and would rather propegate their views that are basicly under the heading of unsound doctrine regarding the order and form of church gatherings and fellowsip. If one followed theit bias against biblical eldersip, we would have chaos and confusion. I do agree with their take on the false and made made and demonic influences that have crept into the church and passed off as biblical. An interesting read but warn you of their bias negatives toward true biblical eldershiip.
