Tell us a little about yourself. I am not only the author of this project, but I've lived it. As a boomer who is watching two beloved parents enter and traverse the aging process -- and also as one of two primary caregivers for my 90+-year-old grandmother -- I have a heart for caregivers and the issues of this season of life that threaten to overwhelm us all.
What was your motivation behind this project? I want to offer adult children (women and men, too!) who care for aging parents hope and help. Hope that caregivers are not alone in this journey, that God knows and cares, that His church can be part of our greatest support team, and that there are ways to share the burden so that our parents get the best possible care. And help in ways to locate and make the best use of the resources that are available to us in every area of the aging parent journey -- from medical to household to financial to legal to end-of-life help. We're not alone -- if we just know where to look.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My prayer is that every reader will find in this book encouragement that nothing we do for the Lord is ever in vain ... and that in seeing to the care of our aging parents (whether doing care giving ourselves or finding/hiring others who are more able to provide the care our parents need) we are not only honoring our parents, but also honoring God Himself.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? This project was one I went into kicking and screaming -- begging God to find someone else to write it -- because I knew it would be an emotional journey. All of the families and experts who shared their stories with me as I prepared to write this book (many of which appear in its pages) touched my heart with their candor, their struggles, and their creative solutions. There was so much I didn't know about caring for aging parents when I went into the project -- and there is still so much more to know. But I hope readers will find in its pages the right questions to ask and some starting points where they can find the solutions that will work in their specific care giving situations.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Every caregiver who shared a story in the book -- and the many, many more who have shared their stories with me since I began doing radio, podcast and print interviews for the project -- these are my inspiration. Their love and tenacity and openness will make all the difference in countless lives.
