Publisher's Description

Would you consider your life stretched to the limit?

Are you a burn-the-candle-at-both-ends kind of gal with lots of room for improvement when it comes to creating margins for rest? But you actually love it and wouldn’t want it any other way? Well, so does Lisa Harper.

In her humorous and packed-with-biblical-wisdom way, Lisa shows us that it is possible for a frazzled nature to be glorifying to the Lord. Every late-night conversation with a hurting friend and each precious, adopted child needing a little extra tender loving care—exhausting, yet imperative, ways to be extensions of the gospel. In each of these vignettes illustrating Lisa’s overextended life, we learn that even in the middle of our own pure motives and hectic schedules, it is only by resting in God’s sovereign mercy that we are able to keep risking our hearts to serve his people and fulfill the callings he has placed on us.

Real life . . . abundant life . . . godly life is about loving Jesus and the people he allows us to rub shoulders with well—which means some days you’ll be stretched emotionally and physically. You’ll feel overextended. Thankfully God will expand our hearts and calendars to accommodate the calling. He is in the business of supplying us with new mercies every morning . . . new candles to burn, for more lives needing his light.

Overextended . . . and loving most of it! by Lisa Harper is an unusual book. It wasn't what I expected, but I was thankful for the opportunity to read this book.

Most of the book is autobiographical; it's Lisa's account of the past year, a year full of devastating heartache and unexpected challenges. She truly was overextended, as the book says, yet she found ways to keep on going, doing all that God called her to do. She uses her story to tell us what she learned. She does this by scattering brief Bible studies and life insights throughout the book, worked into the story at relevant points. Chapter 4, Blasting through Burnout, gives readers a simple, step-by-step acrostic to use whenever they feel overwhelmed. Quotes by well-respected writers and church leaders enhance the content of each chapter.

In the final chapter of the book, Lisa includes a prayer for herself and her readers. I think this part of her prayer most clearly sums up the intent of the book:

Lord Jesus, . . . If anyone besides my immediate family reads this, please use this imperfect prose to help rip off the unnecessary burdens they're lugging around as well. I pray they will be light enough to take whatever leap of faith you've called them to.

As Lisa continues living her overextended life, which now includes the blessing of an adopted daughter from Haiti, I'll be whispering prayers for her, and others like her, whenever God brings this book and its lessons to mind--whenever I feel overwhelmed. The insights Lisa shared through her experiences will help me with this.

I thank Thomas Nelson Publishers for sending a complimentary copy of Overextended for this honest review.

Lisa Harper talks about how a lot of us like to burn the candle at both ends, but actually love it that way. We aren't the ones complaining that our schedules are too full.

She weaves funny stories about her own life with Biblical knowledge and expresses how being pulled in every direction -- emotionally AND physically can actually be a blessing. I really liked her approach and her writing style and this one was the perfect quick read for me.

The stories in the book will especially appeal to moms looking to adopt or going through the adoption process, but I'm not and I still enjoyed it and felt it was relevant.

I first heard Lisa Harper speak at the Women of Faith conference in Columbus, OH this past August. I immediately connected with her and found her utterly fascinating. Her knowledge of the Gospel and her excitement in sharing it are contagious.

Thus, I was very pleased to see Lisa's newest book Overextended... and Loving Most of It: The Unexpected Joy of Being Harried, Heartbroken, and Hurling Oneself Off Cliffs available to review. The name of the book caught my eye at first glance. I think the complicated title points to the reality that life is complicated and often we make it even more complicated by the activities and events that we commit to. But, Lisa's book takes "complicated" and "overextended" and connects them with Gospel truth about being all-out for the glory of the Lord, even when times are tough.

Throughout the text (and amidst the hilarious stories), Lisa encourages and challenges us to: love bigger, fear smaller, and run headlong into the arms of Jesus. I appreciate Lisa challenging us to do things that aren't easy. I love how she talks about her own fears, struggles, and tough situations -- admitting that she doesn't have an "easy" life. And I very much enjoyed the tone of her book. This may have something to do with the fact that I've heard her speak in person, but I could really hear Lisa's passion and love for other fellow believers (especially women!) coming to life on the pages. I certainly encourage anyone and everyone to read her book (and - attend the Women of Faith conference if you have the opportunity to do so!).

I had read the back of the book for a synopsis of what I'd be reading but I wish I would've read the "about the author" section before choosing this book to review. Although I've never heard her speak, I believe Harper would be a gifted speaker and one I might enjoy hearing live. I was slightly irritated by the many pop-culture references Harper used (In my perspective, it makes for an engaging talk, but an annoying read). In addition, I personally feel the necessity for an unspoken respect towards Scripture, and did not care for her modern day translations of Biblical accounts (e.g- calling Moses "Moe" and talking about Joshua texting the Israelites); I don't mind when it is found in a Veggie Tales cartoon, but find it a bit offensive in the adult Christian living genre. She mentions in her book having a 40,000 word deadline to complete in two weeks, and at times I felt that she was just trying to fill up pages (especially when she added multiple Facebook message status updates and a 17-page letter to her father). The book was a bit too long-winded, even for me, to where I felt like I was flipping back and forth, or glancing once again at the chapter's title in order to figure out her take home point.

Although I was frustrated with the aforementioned points, I did appreciate the few gems she had tucked within the pages. Harper uses events from her life to illustrate that it is possible to love others and glorify God while living a chaotically busy life. I love hearing accounts of God working in human lives in an incredibly visible way and she had many, ranging from an exuberant octogenarian heading overseas for her 52nd missions trip, to a Taco Bell employee just looking for confirmation of God's omnipresent love on her birthday. I also appreciated the acronym BLAST she created to help us not only survive, but thrive in our "Ca.Ray.Zee. seasons" of life. Finally, I think she had a very good apologetic of the Christian faith against the secular humanistic worldview of today, and loved that she included quotes, ranging from Pascal and Schaeffer to Chesterton and Lewis.

In the end though, I did not feel like it was enough for me. I was looking for more. The back of the book says that she "shows us" how to find rest and glorify God, and Harper does that using her own life as an example, but I was looking for a bit more substance and instruction for the size of the book and didn't feel filled in that end. At first I thought she didn't even support her thesis, but after much reflection, I feel like I was looking at it from a different angle. People are always telling my husband and I that we need to create margin in our lives, as we are consistently busy. I was reading this book, with that in mind, seeing overextended as being stretched thin with a busy schedule, and desiring to know how I could glorify God more brightly through it. And to that end, I was disappointed. But what I did learn though is that in the times of my life where I am overextended, pulled, not by my calendar, but by God stretching me, I can still exhibit love, gratitude, and joy while focusing on running into the arms of Jesus daily. And I'm thankful for that reminder.
