Editorial Reviews

The Latin word for cross is crux. In this fine book on the cross, Bill Farley takes us to the crux of the Christian faith. Outrageous Mercy indeed.
Farley’s argument is bracing and presented with clarity…I found his work stimulating for meditating upon and proclaiming the faith.
With his book, Outrageous Mercy, Bill Farley has written a magnum opus on the centrality of the cross in Christian life. Using a dynamite combination of erudite scholarship and warm, honest, personal transparency he has exposed the shallowness of much of my thinking about the cross. The cross is presented as not simply an historical cross, where an eternal judicial transaction occurred, but a present-day multi-faceted cross—a means of death which God asks us to embrace on a daily basis in order to find life. Farley explores with penetrating insight how we can do so. This book represents a significant contribution to the church’s understanding of the significance of the cross. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
The chapter on suffering presents a comforting view, and the one on worship is an excellent treatise on meaningful worship…Eleven subdivided chapters make this book usable for elective study on Sunday morning, but it’s also basic doctrine for individual study.
It's so easy to forget the gospel and to try to live a "good Christian life" in your own strength. Bill Farley has created a winsome reminder of how essential, radical, and mind-blowingly merciful the gospel actually is. This is a great book for new believers, but it's even more useful for established believers battling spiritual weariness. It's a splash of cold water to the dry soul—Carolyn McCulley, author of "Radical Womanhood: Feminine Faith in a Feminist World" and "Did I Kiss Marriage Goodbye? Trusting God with a Hope Deferred." This book has obviously been forged out on the anvil of sincere thought and real living. There is no hype or fluff. Reading it through thoughtfully twice has been most beneficial to my soul and thoughts. I especially appreciated the chapters on suffering and worship. God's people very much need to hear and heed these words. The message has been like strong medicine to me, helping me to see my own shameful self-centeredness and to become re-centered on what is truly most important.
Outrageous Mercy provoked my spirit in outward worship of our great Redeemer, sometimes with tears.
Outrageous Mercy . . . is a powerful, Cross-centered book…any effort to find this book will be richly rewarded!
Farley is a strong writer with a memorable, hard hitting message. . . . He speaks the truth in love and humility.
Farley writes logically and practically, liberally sprinkling personal stories and quotes. With passion and sensitivity, he calls the church back to the biblical doctrine of the cross. It’s a needed message in the church today. Recommend to church leaders.

I could not find a smooth flow in this book. Maybe because I have read numerous books on the Cross so I was expecting this book to surpass all the others. Maybe I was looking for something new that the other authors had not expounded on. It seemed to me that he was using every word he could think of just to fill the book with words. I believe W.P. Farley [I don't know him] is a great man of God but to be completely honest, I wish I had not purchased the book. Sorry, but I have to be true to my opinion.

William Farley discusses honestly, his growing knowledge of the cross telling us he was a Christian for 12 years before discovering the deeper truths of the cross. He found those truths in (and cites often) the works of Jonathan Edwards, Stephen Charnock, John Stott, John Piper, Tozer and others but he makes each concept clear by writing to a non-theologian audience.Like most Christian, I've been taught basic doctrine and I've read the Bible. Still, I knew I was missing something. I was missing something that made Christ the very joy of a persons life, the center of their faith. I've certainly been taught the cross, yet I knew there was something more. Something that I wasn't seeing because the cross was not living in me. I couldn't reconcile God's mercy and justice or his love in this world. I could say the Father was glorified and that the crucifixion was essential and the final sacrifice. That we are saved by grace. But it wasn't a living, joyous truth. It was knowledge. Outrageous Mercy is written for people who want to know Christ's outrageous love and better understand all the living truth of the cross.
